Monica Conyers has been released from federal prison in West Virginia.

The former Detroit City Council president who was jailed on bribery charges was released from the Alderson Federal Prison Camp, also known by the nickname Camp Cupcake, on Thursday, according to Edmond Ross, a spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Conyers was transferred to a residential re-entry center, essentially a halfway house, although the specific location has not been disclosed.

Conyers, who was projected to be released in May, began a scheduled 37-month prison sentence in September 2010.

Ross called the process “pretty routine.”

“All inmates are, as they are approaching their release dates, … considered for some type of community corrections as a bridge from the prison back to the community,” Ross said.

The re-entry centers are operated on a contract basis, and are not run by the Bureau of Prisons, but Ross said that residents are accountable for their activities and to the staff at those facilities 24 hours a day.

“They use this time to go out and seek employment, or if they’ve secured employment, to go to a job every day,” Ross said.
