We use the phrase “Texas legend” far too often. Too early in many cases.

Well, the phrase may not have been invented for Darrell Royal, but he indeed is the embodiment of it.

A Texas legend, indeed.

Royal died Wednesday morning. He was 88.

Those of you who think Mack Brown put UT football on the map, may be too young to know how influential a football coach Royal was, and how he helped turn college football into a religion in these parts.

Royal, a son of Oklahoma, who played for the Sooners, is one of the reasons so many boys grow up in the Lone Star State wanting to be college football stars.

He won three national championships with teams that were smart, disciplined and innovative.

He and assistant coach Emory Bellard invented the wishbone, the perfect offense for the quick, strong offensive linemen and the talented runners in this state. And more importantly, a scheme that helped him hold to his most famous observation: “Three things can happen when you pass, and two of ‘em are bad.” Scissors-32x32.png
