Races Show Tight Battle for Control of Senate

By Caitlin Huey-Burns - October 24, 2012

After congressional Democrats suffered what President Obama characterized as a "shellacking" in the 2010 midterm elections -- forcing Rep. Nancy Pelosi to relinquish the speaker's gavel -- it appeared that Democratic erosion in the Senate might turn the upper chamber over to Republicans in two years' time.

But political climates often shift and candidates are unpredictable -- as Missouri Republican Todd Akin proved with his infamous “legitimate rape” comment. Just that quickly, once bright outlooks can turn cloudy.

With their prospects for taking control of the Senate now up in the air, Republicans insist that doing so was always going to be tough fight. “There have only been two occasions in the past 40 years where either party has won five or more Senate seats: That was Reagan 1980, and in 2008 with Obama,” said one Republican strategist familiar with this year’s races. “In early and mid-September, broadly, we were not in a good place as a party,” the strategist noted, referring to President Obama’s post-convention bounce. But after Mitt Romney’s surge following the first presidential debate, “we’ve definitely seen a swing back to where things were.” Scissors-32x32.png

Ohio: Sen. Sherrod Brown is Stifling Big Government’s Best Friend

Hey, Ohio, Senator Sherrod Brown is just not working. He’s one of the most extreme, left-wing Senators in Washington and his constant rubber stamping of Obama’s worst, big government boondoggles is hurting the Buckeye State’s economy, not to mention the country.

I have to say, that ad is pretty funny.

Senator Brown has been awarded the dubious distinction of being the most liberal Senator in the nation. Even the left-leaning Scissors-32x32.png

Harry Reid's Graveyard

Senate Democrats are promising pre-emptive gridlock for 2013.

Even if Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan win on November 6, his agenda will be stymied if Republicans can't pick up at least three more seats than their current 47 and control the Senate. That's clear from the last two years, when Harry Reid's not-so-deliberative body became the graveyard for fiscal and other reform.

House Republicans won an historic midterm election in 2010, picking up 63 seats. They also gained six Senate seats, but a handful of weak GOP candidates (Sharron Angle, Ken Buck, Christine O'Donnell) cost them control of the upper body. Back in charge in 2011, Mr. Reid proceeded to stop nearly everything that House Republicans passed. President Obama hasn't even had to sweat a veto fight because nothing escapes Mr. Reid's lost world Scissors-32x32.png
