Laura Washington

Chicago Sun Times

October 8, 2012

This was no ordinary rubber chicken affair. That was my reaction to the extraordinary keynoter at Tuesday’s Better Government Association annual luncheon.

Lara Logan, a correspondent for CBS’ “60 Minutes,” delivered a provocative speech to about 1,100 influentials from government, politics, media, and the legal and corporate arenas. Such downtown gatherings are a regular on Chicago’s networking circuit. (I am a member of the BGA’s Civic Leadership Committee, and the Chicago Sun-Times was a sponsor).

Lara is courageous.

It is going to be hard for the Left to snip this. It is also going to be hard for parts of the Right to ignore the underlying message of this.

We withdraw at are own peril.

Did you know it's right around 14 hours flying time from Kabul to Knoxville? Just something to ponder.

Someone should tell Obama

10/10/12

Oct. 2 CBS reporter Lara Logan made a speech in Chicago at the Better Government Association’s luncheon of about 1,100 persons from government, media, politics, and legal and corporate positions. She said there is a “major lie being propagated” in America. That lie says the Taliban has been “tamed” or weakened by the American Military. The American government should quit downplaying the strength of our enemies in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which is being used as a rationale to get America out of the war. That is what Washington has been saying the last two years. Logan has spent years covering wars, and 11 years after 9-11 she said “..they still hate us, now more than ever.” Al-Qaida and the Taliban have not disappeared, they have not been vanquished, they are re-grouping. Logan actually called for retribution for the killing of Ambassador Christopher Stevens and colleagues in Libya and said “..America should exact revenge and let the world know the United States will not be attacked on its own soil...and that the United States will not stand by and do nothing about it.”

Someone should tell Obama and his cabinet that.

I would say it takes a fair amount of courage to do that. Perhaps that’s why it hasn’t been done.
