DENVER -- Just seconds after the presidential debate ended here at the University of Denver Wednesday night, Mitt Romney's advisers and surrogates rushed to the press room to take reporters' questions and tout their man's performance. They were eager, happy, and ready to talk because they believed their man scored a clear win in his first face-off with President Obama.

After a few minutes of interviews, and the arrival of still more Romney surrogates, some reporters looked around and asked: Are there any Democrats here? Where are the Obama advisers and surrogates eager to speak for the president?

It took a while for them to show up. And when they arrived, they were on the defensive from the get-go about the president's performance.

No, he wasn't tired, they said. No, he wasn't rusty. No, he wasn't too laid back. The president, they explained, "did exactly what he had to do," which was "to lay out a very clear plan for the future," said campaign manager Jim Messina.

And Romney? "There is some sense that Mitt Romney was aggressive, but I think it was a theatrical aggression," said senior adviser David Plouffe. "There was breathtaking dishonesty by Governor Romney tonight on his tax plan. Breathtaking." Opinion: Romney debates an empty chair

One presidential candidate showed up to debate Wednesday night. His name is Mitt Romney.

President Obama was often grim, mostly disengaged, and generally ineffective in their first showdown. He could have been standing next to anyone; he never seriously challenged Romney on any point he made. Romney was sharp, aggressive, and "likeable enough," to borrow a phrase from candidate Obama in 2008.

As the night wore on and Romney realized that debating Obama was not unlike standing next to an empty chair, Scissors-32x32.pnghttp://www.dailynews.com/opinions/ci_21694382/opinion-romney-debates-an-empty-chair

Real Obama Revealed In Bumbling Debate Performance

2012 Campaign: President Obama's abysmal performance was a shocking revelation to many who saw it. Why were they surprised? The Barack Obama the media have nurtured, promoted and protected isn't the real one.

From Chris Matthews to Bill Maher to Andrew Sullivan, left-wing pundits and media sycophants who've promoted Obama's political career were frantic after Wednesday's debate.

"What was he doing?" shouted a furious Matthews.

"A disaster," said Sullivan.

"Obama looks like he DOES need a teleprompter!" tweeted Maher, understandably miffed since he's given more than $1 million to get Obama re-elected.

But their anger is misplaced. After all, they stage-managed Obama's career for him, refusing to ask tough questions, not looking into his past, and, in general, giving him a pass that wouldn't be given to anyone else.

These and others are the same media folks who slobbered over Obama but never fully vetted him in 2008 — and Scissors-32x32.png
