Yemeni police Thursday shot dead four protesters and wounded 34 others when they opened fire on a crowd attempting to storm the US embassy in Sana'a to protest a film mocking Islam, a security official said.

The White House, meanwhile, said it was doing everything it could to protect its diplomats in Yemen, where witnesses reported that roads leading to embassy were closed down as the area was calm later in the evening

.

"Four people were killed and 34 others were wounded in the clashes that lasted from morning until late in the evening" in the area around the U.S. embassy in Sanaa, the official said, adding that eight of them were "seriosuly injured."

Rioters chanting “O Messenger of Allah, O Mohammed...” launched a second assault on the American compound following an attack rebuffed by security forces earlier in the day.

President Abdurabuh Mansour Hadi apologized to U.S. President Barack Obama and to the American people for the acts of “a mob” and ordered an investigation into the attack.

"Those who are behind [this attack] are a mob that are not aware of the far-reaching plots of Zionist forces, especially those that made a film insulting the prophet,” Hadi said.

At least one country knows their responsibility when it comes to protecting an embassy.

The thing we must understand about Yemen is they are in the middle of an on going civil war, and to say the situation is fluid is a real understatement. A lot of tribal politics involved, and one of the reasons President Hadi apologized is American support for him his government and tribe are vital to them staying in power. Thing of Yemen as Afghanistan without the mountains.

I was going to say that their help was very self-serving. Still, that money did not help in Cairo and Benghazi.

a couple of points

A. When you look to "The Arab World" (and that is term is a subject for another time) forget black and white, take the ideas of good guys and bad guys and put it over in the corner...because it doesn't exist. What we have is nothing but shades of gray...welcome to the Real world. So of course it is self serving. News flash the world runs on self serving.

B. Benghazi? There's a real government in Benghazi? I'm gonna need a source on that.

OTOH

Don't Give Up on the Arab Spring

Why America did the right thing in Libya -- and freedom will eventually win.

C. Our Relationship with Egypt is as we speak undergoing a..reevaluation. I am of the opinion that when Obama spoke today he was sending a message to Egypt...the walking back of it not withstanding. And even though Obama is no great friend of Israel the message he sent was...'you guys have a choice to make...choose wisely'.

As always I reserve my god given constitutional right to be wrong.

A. Yes it does make the world go around.

B. I think we would have to say 'A government of sorts.' Government control has not permeated to the entire country yet. Unknown if it ever will.

C. Sort of agree but I wonder if Obama could have been so 'nuanced' being he is Obama. I wonder if Egypt was able to catch it or do they really care? Morsi seems very willing to go it on his own.

Obama not only took back what he had said but reiterated that we will not cut off the money spigot today. As someone pointed out though, only Congress can spend money. I think they may have a different opinion.

I think it is going to be difficult for us ever to fully understand the ME mind. Don't remember who said it, but they never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. They seem to be satisfied to live in the last century.

Valin, I know you are more conversant about the area. Obviously I am not. Just have SWAG's about it.

I readily admit I could be wrong, but this is what I think, in spite of my love of making fun of the State Dept. there are some pretty share people there

Someone over at CGP made a similar comment, my suggestion The Old Testament...Joshua comes to mind.
