The State of the Senate Races

By: davenj1 (Diary) | September 9th, 2012 at 07:04 AM |

This year, there are 33 Senate seats up for election with 23 of them currently held by Democrats or independents who caucus with Democrats (Lieberman in Connecticut and Sanders in Vermont). Currently, the Democrats control the Senate by a 53-47 margin. Of the 23 Democratic seats, seven incumbents are not running while of the ten Republican held seats, four incumbents are not running. One of those four lost their primary bid to a challenger (Lugar in Indiana). Of the four open Republican seats, two of them could be considered in jeopardy to some degree- Indiana and Maine. Conversely, six of seven open Democratic seats are in jeopardy of reverting to Republican control to some degree. Only two of six incumbent Republicans face any challenge while 4 of 16 Democratic incumbents face a challenge.

A note to Granny: You’re not in Oklahoma anymore

By Howie Carr

Friday, September 21, 2012 - Updated 4 hours ago

Round one to Scott Brown.

Granny Warren is described in one of her bios as a “legendary high school debater in Oklahoma.”

She’s not in high school anymore.

The kid from the poor side of town handled her with ease, landing one blow after another. You could see how thin-skinned she really is. She’s not used to having anybody talk back to her.

When he was pummeling her on the asbestos litigation, and her $225,000 payday,

and on the $700,000 she and her husband make from Harvard, she seemed on the verge of losing it. But Scott didn’t go for the knockout — that never works in a debate for a guy. Just ask Rick Lazio.

My favorite line was when he said, “Can you imagine a Senate with 100 Professor Warrens?”

I can’t imagine 100 Professor Warrens anywhere, except Scissors-32x32.png

Sherrod Brown Doubles Down on His Godwin’s Law Campaign Strategy

The Democrat senator isn't backing off from his "Big Lie" hit on Jewish Republican and Iraq War veteran Josh Mandel.

September 21, 2012 - 2:44 pm

Not quite two weeks ago Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), one of the most liberal members of the Senate, made waves by releasing an ad accusing his opponent, state Treasurer Josh Mandel, of being the candidate of the “Big Lie.” The “Big Lie,” of course, was a term coined by Adolf Hitler and is associated with Nazi propaganda:

“All this was inspired by the principle–which is quite true within itself–that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility…These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes. From time immemorial, however, the Jews have known better than any others how falsehood and calumny can be exploited.”

—Adolf Hitler , Mein Kampf, vol. I, ch. X

Josh Mandel is Jewish. His grandfather survived the Holocaust in Poland, while his grandmother was hidden from Nazis by a Catholic family in Italy during World War II, making Brown’s Godwin’s line of attack especially offensive.

At age 34, Mandel is something of a conservative Republican rock star in Ohio. He is a Tea Party favorite, supported by FreedomWorks and Jim DeMint’s Senate Conservatives Fund. He graduated from both The Ohio State University and Case Western University Reserve Law School and then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves where he served eight years, graduating first in his class from boot camp and Marines Corps Intelligence School. Mandel served two tours in Al Albar Province, Iraq.

· Friends, I just released this joint statement with Rick Santorum on our support for Todd Akin in Missouri. Please share! This seat is critical to winning control of the Senate.

"If Republicans are to win back the Senate and stop President Obama's liberal agenda, we must defeat Senator Claire McCaskill in Missouri. Her support of President Obama's job-killing, big-spending policies are sending our country into an economic abyss. And her passionate support of ObamaCare is ensuring healthcare costs go up while quality of care goes down. Simply put, we cannot afford six more years of Senator McCaskill.

Mia Love up big in Utah House race

Rick Moran

GOP Convention star Mia Love has taken a big lead in her Utah House race according to the Salt Lake Tribune:

Love's polling firm, Public Opinion Strategies, said that Love is now leading the race, 51-36, and "This heavily Republican district is coming home." POS said its July poll of the district showed Matheson leading 51-38, meaning the race took a 28-point swing.

Love said in a statement that the support is "encouraging."

"Sadly, Jim Matheson has turned to false attacks on my community and my family. Now is the time for Jim Matheson to stop his negative campaign," she said. Scissors-32x32.png

Todd Akin confident he’ll prevail over Claire McCaskill in Missouri

Jason Hancock | Kansas City Star Posted on Thursday, September 27, 2012

Jason Hancock The Kansas City SJEFFERSON CITY – More than a month after his comments about “legitimate rape” nearly derailed his campaign for U.S. Senate, Republican Todd Akin said Thursday that it has become clear to him that he will triumph over Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill this fall.

Part of his confidence, he said, comes from McCaskill's demeanor during their debate last week, which he said was not as "ladylike" as it was when she faced off with Republican Jim Talent in 2006.

“I think we have a very clear path to victory, and apparently Claire McCaskill thinks we do, too, because she was very aggressive at the debate, which was quite different than it was when she ran against Jim Talent,” Akin said. “She had a confidence and was much more ladylike (in 2006), but in the debate on Friday she came out swinging, and I think that’s because she feels threatened.”

The two rivals faced off for the first time last week at a debate Scissors-32x32.pnghttp://www.mcclatchydc.com/2012/09/27/169888/todd-akin-confident-hell-prevail.html

Fellow Conservatives:

This is U.S. Senator Jim DeMint.

You may remember the slogan "It's the economy, stupid" used by Bill Clinton during the 1992 presidential campaign to make the point that George H. W. Bush had not adequately addressed the economy.

Clinton's political strategist, James Carville, posted the phrase inside campaign headquarters as a way to keep the team focused and on message. The phrase later became the de facto slogan for the Clinton election campaign.

The slogan is relevant again in 2012 as Americans consider Barack Obama's dismal economic record, but if you consider yourself a freedom-loving American, I have a different slogan for you.

"It's the Senate, stupid."

Most Americans are focused on the presidential race right now, but winning the White House -- as critical as it is -- won't be enough to save the country we love without a strong, conservative majority in the United States Senate. Its-The-Senate-Stupid.png

  • Without a conservative Senate, we won't repeal Obamacare.
  • Without a conservative Senate, we won't balance the budget.
  • Without a conservative Senate, we won't secure our borders.
  • Without a conservative Senate, we won't stop the bailouts.
  • And without a conservative Senate, we won't enact the pro-growth policies needed to get America back to work.

Be Smart. Change the Senate.

If you're reading this letter, chances are, you follow current events more closely than most and you probably understand the point I'm making -- winning the Senate is key to restoring America's greatness.

The simple fact of the matter is this: a Republican president without a conservative Senate is a waste of a Republican president.

A president can campaign on good policies, but he doesn't write the bills. As long as liberals are in charge of writing legislation, it will be difficult for a Republican president to sign the right bills into law.

Does anyone think Harry Reid will ever send a bill to the President's desk to repeal ObamaCare? The answer is "no" and that's why I am focused on sending strong conservatives to the Senate who will make that a reality.

Act Now. Support Senate Conservatives.

As we head down the home stretch of the most important election in our lifetime, my challenge to you is this: keep your focus on electing true conservatives to the U.S. Senate. These Senate races aren't getting the same media attention as the presidential race, but they're no less important.

This is why I founded the Senate Conservatives Fund, an independent, grassroots organization that helps elect principled leaders to the U.S. Senate, and it's why I so strongly support its efforts today.

SCF has endorsed eight standout leaders in 2012:

  • Josh Mandel (Ohio)
  • Ted Cruz (Texas)
  • Jeff Flake (Arizona)
  • Richard Mourdock (Indiana)
  • Deb Fischer (Nebraska)
  • George Allen (Virginia)
  • Tom Smith (Pennsylvania)
  • Dan Bongino (Maryland)

8-SCF-Candidates.png

These candidates share a strong belief in the principles that make America great and they understand the critical role the U.S. Constitution plays in preserving our freedoms.

These candidates support all of SCF's policy goals, including:

These leaders also have records that prove they not only talk the talk, but also walk the walk. And they've all shown the courage to stand up to their own party's leaders when it was necessary to support and defend our principles and values.

So if you agree that winning a conservative majority in the U.S. Senate is vital to our nation's future and if you're willing to engage in these races even at a time when the media ignores them, then please do three things today.

  • Sign up for SCF email updates so you can stay informed.
  • Make a contribution to help SCF's endorsed candidates. Without financial support, these candidates won't be able to get their message out.
  • Forward this email and encourage your family and friends to support these outstanding Senate candidates.

Thank you for your commitment to principles of freedom. We live the greatest country in the world and if we work together in smart and effective ways, I'm confident we can preserve it for generations to come.

Respectfully,

demint.png

Jim DeMint

United States Senator

The Senate Conservatives Fund is a grassroots organization with more than 100,000 members that raises money for conservative candidates running for the U.S. Senate. SCF is an independent organization and is not affiliated with the Republican Party or any of its campaign committees.

What Erick Forgets

By: Jack_Savage (Diary) | September 27th, 2012 at 07:22 PM | 10

RESIZE: AAA

The last few days have been incredible. Instead of focusing on the events surrounding the assassination of Ambassador Stevens – the first to be murdered since our ambassador to Afghanistan was killed under the watchful eye of Jimmy Carter, we’re talking about polls. Instead of focusing on Barack Obama refusing to answer questions about the murder, citing an “ongoing investigation by the FBI”, then finding that no one from the FBI has been to Benghazi- even today – we are fighting amongst ourselves over polling trends and skewed sampling. And instead of understanding what is really going on in the country, with gas double what it was in 2008, household incomes down 8.2% since 2008, GDP revised to a barely-above-recession 1.3% and food inflation out of control, we are giving the Romney campaign advice.

Here is what Erick, and we, forget.

In the swing state of Virginia before Obama, Bob McDonnell beat Creigh Deeds by only 3,000 votes in the race for attorney general. After Obama, he beat Deeds by 300,000 in the race for Governor. Before Obama, the two Senate seats were firmly in Democrat hands. After Obama, one Democrat has suddenly retired and the seat is very much in play.
