The President has also each time led his speech with the outlandish nonsense that Thomas Jefferson held the “first iftar dinner” in the White House. And every time it’s been utter hogwash. This year’s speech was no different in that respect. For the 2012 iftar dinner celebration. Obama said the following: As I’ve noted before, Thomas Jefferson once held a sunset dinner here with an envoy from Tunisia — perhaps the first Iftar at the White House, more than 200 years ago. Argyle58
Well, there is, actually, "a long tradition of Muslims having an impact on America". Our first foriegn military actions as a soveriegn nation were assaults by our naval and marine forces against the Muslim sultanates of North Africa who claimed that piracy, kidnapping and murder committed against non-Muslims was their right according to the Q'uran. The "Shores of Tripoli" mentioned in the Marine Corps anthem refers to these early assaults against Islamists, whom Jefferson recognized in his writings as a political threat, not a religious movement deserving of tolerance and respect. Radical Islamists have never, repeat, NEVER, been a friend to the U.S., nor of any other democratic form of government. To insinuate that Jefferson thought so disrespects the Office of President, as well as the citizens of this country. Some of us actually do study history!
