Israel blames Iran for deadly bus explosion targeting Israeli tourists in Bulgaria

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is promising a strong reaction after an attack on Israeli tourists that he says was carried out by Iran.

 

A bus carrying mostly Israeli youth in a Bulgaria exploded near an airport Wednesday, killing at least six people and wounding at least 32 others, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said. Witnesses told Israeli media that the huge blast occurred soon after someone boarded the vehicle.

 

A Bulgarian news agency is also reporting that two pregnant women and an 11-year-old Israeli girl are among the wounded.

New proof Iran behind Argentina attack: Jewish leader

AFP - Argentinian prosecutors have proof of Iranian involvement in a deadly 1994 attack on a Jewish community center, the center's president claimed Wednesday.

 

In a speech to mark the 18th anniversary of a bombing that killed 84, Guillermo Borger said evidence "of participation by diplomats known to be affiliated with Iran's embassy in our country will surely come to light soon."

 

The day was also marked by another bombing, this time an attack on Israeli tourists in Bulgaria, which Israel also quickly blamed on Iran.

Israeli TV channels and radio stations have given over almost all their news bulletins to updates and reactions, and the story is the lead in the morning newspapers and websites.

 

"Terror in holiday city" declares the headline in the popular tabloid Yediot Aharonot, echoed in more sober terms in the rest of the daily press. All front pages report Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's remark that "everything points to Iran".

 

Most pundits agree with the government that Iran was responsible - either directly or through its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

Iran denies responsibility for Bulgaria bus bombing

 

Iran's embassy in Bulgaria denied on Thursday Israeli accusations that Tehran was behind a bomb attack on an airport bus in the city of Burgas that killed five Israeli tourists.

 

"The unfounded statements by different statesmen of the Zionist regime in connection with the accusations against Iran about its possible participation in the incident with the blown-up bus with Israeli tourists in Burgas is a familiar method of the Zionist regime, with a political aim, and is a sign of the weakness ... of the accusers," the Islamic Republic's mission in Sofia said in a statement.

Suicide Attacker With Fake U.S. ID Blamed in Bus Bomb

 

BURGAS, Bulgaria — The attack on a tour bus carrying Israeli vacationers outside the airport here was carried out by a suicide bomber using fake American identification, officials said on Thursday.

 

Speaking to reporters at the airport at this Black Sea resort on Thursday morning, Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said the bomber was carrying a fake Michigan driver’s license at the time of the blast. One of the Israeli victims died overnight, along with the 36-year-old Bulgarian bus driver.

 

Mr. Tsvetanov described the bomber as a man with long hair wearing a backpack. The man looked like a tourist and blended in with the travelers from Israel, security footage showed.

A bus carrying Israeli tourists at Bulgaria's Burgas airport suddenly exploded today, killing seven and wounding at least 30 more.

 

• A U.N. spokesperson said that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned the attack "in the strongest possible terms." In fact, however, the U.N. chief's choice of terms was weak in comparison to his statement two weeks ago on the bombing of churches in Kenya. Bulgarian press names bomber: Mehdi Ghezali

Terrorist said to have been a Swedish citizen with a history of Muslim extremist activities

 

Bulgarian media on Thursday named the suicide bomber who blew up a bus full of Israeli tourists, killing five Israelis and a local bus driver, in the Black Sea resort of Burgas on Wednesday as 36-year-old Mehdi Ghezali.

 

Ghezali reportedly arrived in Bulgaria five weeks before the bombing and arrived at the airport via taxi, Channel 2 reported. He was also reportedly given the bomb by someone else, but no further details were provided.

 

There was no independent confirmation of the veracity of the information. The reports surfaced soon after Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had publicly accused Hezbollah, directed by Iran, of responsibility for the bombing. The Prime Minister’s Office made no comment on the reports.
