Juneteenth ought to be a day of observance

Dear President Obama,

 

Please declare Juneteenth a national day of observance.

 

We are not asking for a national holiday. We are not arguing for a paid day off. We’re talking about a day of observance, similar to Flag Day. On such days, Americans are urged to think about something important to us all.

 

Juneteenth began in Galveston, Texas, but it is not just a Galveston story or a Texas story.

 

Juneteenth marks the day that slaves in Texas learned they were free. But, because of geography and the slow communications of the day, the slaves in Texas were the last to be freed.
