Valin
Washington Confidential : Joel Gehrke 6/4/12 Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, R-Texas, challenged Republican rival Ted Cruz to a Spanish-language debate, according to Univision. The Cruz team dismissed the "gimmick" from Dewhurst. "It's no surprise that David Dewhurst would like to debate in another language," Cruz campaign aide John Drogin told The Washington Examiner. "He wants to debate in a language that 99 percent of primary voters don't understand to hide his claim that the Dewhurst Wage Tax isn't an income tax or the claim that his $72 billion spending increase is a 'cut.'" Draggingtree
June 5, 2012 Texas Republicans savor ouster of DA David Paulin If you want to understand Texas Republicans, forget about the GOP primary race pitting Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst against Tea Party-backed former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz -- the contest spotlighted by the national media. The most fascinating race in last week's primary was in fact the contest for district attorney in staunchly conservative Williamson County (pop. 422,679), part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area in Central Texas. It pitted long-serving incumbent John Bradley -- a smooth and patrician lawyer endorsed by Gov. Rick Perry -- against Jana Duty, a young county prosecutor whose experience included prosecuting juveniles and dealing with family violence cases. But unlike the race pitting Cruz against Dewhurst for the seat of retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, this contest was pervaded with the sorts of intriguing subplots found in a John Grisham thriller: two brutal murders, a wrongful conviction, and what many voters regarded as the lame excuses given by Bradley -- a former prosecutor of the year -- for keeping an innocent man behind bars. In short, the race revolved around the case of Michael Morton -- an innocent man wrongly convicted in Williamson County of murdering his wife, Christine, in 1986. Last year, Morton was exonerated by DNA evidence after spending nearly 25 years in prison Read more: http://www.americant...l#ixzz1wvqbpO9T

Draggingtree
Late Date, Summer Heat to Affect Texas Race By Abby Livingston Roll Call Staff June 29, 2012, Midnight Douglas Graham/CQ Roll Call File Photo Former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz (above) has strong support from several conservative outside groups, including FreedomWorks and Sens. Jim DeMint and Rand Paul. In Texas, the Senate Republican primary is about to get hot — literally, with the candidate who can motivate voters to turn out in the Lone Star State’s scorching summer heat likely to come out on top in this bitter contest. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst should have the edge over former state Solicitor General Ted Cruz in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison ®. But the establishment favorite is in trouble against the tea party darling, as even Dewhurst supporters wonder whether the Austin fixture can inspire voters to show up at the polls July 31, a day when the temperature averages almost 100 degrees in much of the state and most Texans are concentrating on their summer vacation, not on voting in a runoff election. “Dewhurst’s problem is that he inspires no one — so he is going to have a harder time getting people to come out and vote for him,” said an Austin Republican operative who is still mulling how he will vote. It is a sentiment echoed in almost every conversation about the race, even among those rooting for Dewhurst. No one can remember a statewide election taking place so late in the summer, and there is a great deal of uncertainty as to how that timing will affect ballot returns. Texas primaries usually occur in March, but they read more http://www.rollcall.com/issues/57_160/Late-Date-Summer-Heat-to-Affect-Texas-Race-215813-1.html
