Hey, did you hear that Barack Obama wants to change the national anthem and redesign the American flag to promote better relations with our enemies?

According to Dale Lindsborg in The Washington Post, that's what Obama said on "Meet the Press" Sept. 7. And the Democratic presidential candidate went on to say:

"We as a nation have placed upon the nations of Islam an unfair injustice. My wife disrespects the flag for many personal reasons. Together she and I have attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past, many years ago. She has her views and I have mine. Of course now, I have found myself about to become the pesident of the United States and I have put aside my hatred."

Amazing stuff, don't you think? If you're not an Obama fan, that should confirm all your suspicions -- although there are a few facts that should be taken into account.

For one, Obama did not appear on "Meet the Press" Sept. 7. Also, The Post never ran the column and nobody named Dale Lindsborg works for that newspaper. It's a total fabrication, as should be obvious to anyone with half a brain. However, that hasn't stopped terrified Obamaphobes from forwarding this contrived piece of slander hither and yon on the Internet.

Kind of draws you into the message with that opener huh?

Then you get 11 paragraphs of bias and repeating of "lies" against Obama.

This stuff comes from both the left and right, but, in the current campaign season, it seems mostly to be spilling out of the brooding minds of the Obama-hating faction.

Then we get labeled.

The real source is hidden and it takes effort to refute the allegations. Most people don't have the time to fact check. Instead, if the information reinforces what they want to believe, they will accept it as true.

Yes, I see your article was sourced by a name, but no link to your facts, only to the fake story you made up for the article.. Some of us do have time to fact check and we will be.

I wish I could believe all this mendacity is harmless, but I don't. Lies like these are intended to spread fear, mislead and misinform. By luring good citizens away from the truth, they do nothing less than undermine the foundation of our democracy, an informed electorate.

I suppose people who think winning is all that matters in politics would just call this playing hardball, but I have another word for it: un-American.

Oh, on that we can agree. @DavidVerLee HORSEY, P-I EDITORIAL CARTOONIST

It is time for the truth.

Rush Limbaugh has so much more to apologize for

I’d like to state right here that I try to be mostly wry and analytical when I’m writing about the world of politics, so here’s my wry analysis: The childless, four-times-married Rush Limbaugh is a loathsome, misogynistic pig.

If this were some aberration in Limbaugh’s behavior, fair-minded people might be tempted to accept his grudging and very limited apology. But it is nothing new. This is how he has “entertained” day after day for years. He doesn’t debate. He doesn’t inform. He vilifies, insults, smears, slanders, distorts and misleads. Rush is a schoolyard bully who specializes in picking on girls – or “feminazis,” as he loves to call them.

Limbaugh has led the way in destroying civility in politics. It’s bad enough that his overbearing pseudo-patriotism has been emulated by other right-wing radio and TV commentators; worse is the fact he has become the oracle of the dominant wing of the Republican Party. Gone are the days when William F. Buckley spoke for conservatism in an eloquent, reasoned voice or when Ronald Reagan could share a drink and trade jokes with Democratic House Speaker Tip O’Neill. It is now cool for conservatives to talk trash and act like 14-year-old louts harassing the gay kid in class.

Rush Limbaugh puts the vile in juvenile. He puts the men in mendacity. He puts the repugnant in Republican. He is an arrogant thug. He is what’s wrong with American politics.

I'm sensing a little bias in this article.

CARTOON AND COLUMN: “Real Americans” are not Tea Party priority

Yes, what a glorious time it was back then, before government started setting some rules. The free market picked the winners – oil companies, railroads, mining companies, sweat shop owners, polluters, timber barons, plantation owners, the meat packing industry – and the losers – child laborers, mine workers, mill workers, sharecroppers, people sickened by degraded air, water and land, as well as by tainted food. Greed and exploitation ruled a Gilded Age where the income gap between the industrialists in their sprawling mansions and the workers in their tenements was wide.

Considering the current compensation gap between Wall Street billionaires and middle class folks whose incomes have stagnated for two decades, a return to that happy 19th century utopia seems well under way. The Tea Party crowd should be delighted.

Their delight could be heightened on election day when many of their philosophical compatriots are likely to be elevated to seats in Congress. Of course, the Americans who are most likely to benefit from their ascension are the ones who are funding Tea Party candidacies – Koch Industries and other anonymous corporations, financiers and billionaires.

Real Americans, like Will and Lena, will just have to fend for themselves.

I normally don't follow this, but it will be interesting to see Rush Limbaugh's ratings numbers.
