NEW YORK (AP) — The nation's leading breast-cancer charity, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, is halting its partnerships with Planned Parenthood affiliates — creating a bitter rift, linked to the abortion debate, between two iconic organizations that have assisted millions of women.

The change will mean a cutoff of hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants, mainly for breast exams.

Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress — a probe launched by a conservative Republican who was urged to act by anti-abortion groups.

The rupture, which has not been publicly announced as it unfolded, is wrenching for some of those who've learned about it and admire both organizations.

And is regarded as wonderful news by people who admire both the Susan G. Koman charity and the sanctity of life.

PP raised $400,000 from online donations yesterday. Goes to show you they don't need taxpayer dollars.

Also shows there are people out there who don't have a problem with killing babies.

Given the percentage of black women having abortions, and PP being the largest provider of abortions, and fgiven Margret Sanger's thoughts on the "lesser races}, I could say there are a lot of racists out there....but that would be judgmental, so I won't.

Abortion Rate Among Black Women Far Exceeds Rate for Other Groups

It is really amazing how horrified my liberal friends are over this. What's weird is that its not like the foundation is out picketing them or anything. They just aren't financially supporting them. I honestly don't see what the problem is.

It is crazy. I've got FB friends feuding over the issue.

26 years ago I got pregnant. PP called me to tell me the results were positive and the very next thing out of her mouth was, "Would you like to schedule an abortion." I was gobsmacked. Hell no and I hung up.

I talked with women who had given their babies up for adoption and those who were themselves adopted. I picked the parents and was prepared to go through with it.

I left the hospital without my baby and had to wait 72 hours to sign the papers. When biodad called and said what time should I pick you up to sign the papers.... The Holy Spirit intervened and out of my mouth came the words, "You don't, I'm keeping my baby."

Looked at mom and dad and said, "we need to go shopping, I have a baby." Tears and more tears. Of joy.

Calling the case worker was so hard knowing I had just devastated some couple that had been praying for a baby. I still feel bad to this day.

My baby turned 25 years old today.

You're a great mom. And just think...you saved two babies that day!

After cutting ties with Planned Parenthood, Komen donations up 100 percent

In the wake of this week’s announcement that Susan G. Komen for the Cure will no longer be awarding grants to Planned Parenthood, the breast cancer organization’s donations have gone up 100 percent in the last two days.

“Our donations are up 100 percent in the past two days. With all of the emotion around these issues — which we understand, we get emotional too, we do this every single day of our lives,” Brinker said, explaining that they do not make decisions to be popular, they make them to fight cancer.

On Wednesday Planned Parenthood reported that since Komen ended the relationship, the abortion provider has pulled in $400,000. According to CNN, following the announcement 6,000 donors gave to Planned Parenthood through online contributions.

While pro-choicers believe the decision to sever the relationship was based in politics, Komen continues to argue that the decision was based on internal policy changes which dictate more stringent criteria for grants — which Planned Parenthood does not meet, including the fact that Planned Parenthood is under congressional investigation and does not offer on-site screening, having to refer patients for mammograms, treatment and diagnosis elsewhere.

“We regret that these new policies have impacted some longstanding grantees, such as Planned Parenthood, but want to be absolutely clear that our grant-making decisions are not about politics,” Komen said in a statement Wednesday. “Throughout our 30 year history, our priority has always been and will continue to be the women we serve. As we move forward, we are working to ensure that there is no interruption or gaps in services for the women who need our support most in the fight against breast cancer.”

Since its founding in 1982 Komen has invested more than $1.9 billion in breast cancer treatment and research.
