Money.cnn.com:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Verizon Wireless will soon make some customers pay for the privilege of paying their bills.

The nation's largest wireless company is instituting a $2 "convenience charge" for those customers who make one-time bill payments either online or by telephone. The fee will go into effect on Jan. 15.

"The fee will help allow us to continue to support these single bill payment options ... and is designed to address costs incurred by us for only those customers who choose to make single bill payments," the company said in a statement.

There are three ways for customers to avoid the charge: Customers can make a one-time payment using an electronic check, they can pay their bill using their home banking accounts, such as Citibank (C, Fortune 500) Online, or they can use a Verizon gift card or rebate card. Otherwise, single telephone and online payments will incur a $2 fee.

They still take electronic checks from your bank. I assume this is geared at someone logging into Verizon's website each month and paying by credit card, or a tie in to their checking account. Never really thought it very safe to allow anyone else to tie into my checking account, but I've seen that as an option on some sites.

No, they are instituting the charge because of people paying one month at a time. Only way to avoid it online is sign up to let them take the money out of account each month without authorization each time. I am thinking that is the way I will go. Only obstacle will be agreeing on a day of the month they raid my account. I haven't mailed a bill in a long time.

I have had this done of a couple of accounts without any difficulties. Only difference was it was always the same amount each month.

Another way of avoiding the charge is to allow your bank or credit union send out a check each month. My credit union does it free and the check goes out each month without any difficulties and I save the postage. The problem there would be guessing a good amount to cover the bill each month. Phone bills seem to vary because of usage, days in the billing period, and the company's President Profit.

No matter what we do, they will come up with something to increase their income.

Bizarre..... AT&T is threatening to charge me a fee for refusing to go paperless, and Verizon is wanting to charge a fee to those who DO go paperless.
