Daily Press:

WASHINGTON--President Obama announced the first-ever fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas standards for long-haul rigs, work trucks, and other heavy duty vehicles Tuesday, the second mileage pact with manufacturers in less than a month.

The regulations call for reductions on fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 2018 of 9 to 23 percent, depending on the type of vehicle. Trucks and other heavy vehicles make up only 4 percent of the domestic vehicle fleet, but given the distance they travel, the time they spend idling and their low fuel efficiency, they end up consuming about 20% of all vehicle fuel, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Experts say that a 20 percent reduction in heavy vehicle emissions would boost fuel efficiency to an average of 8 miles per gallon from 6 miles now.

The announcement comes less than two weeks after Obama and the country’s automakers unveiled new fuel economy rules for passenger vehicles that would boost fleet-wide average gas mileage to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025, from about 27.8 miles per gallon now.

The success of the Obama fuel efficiency program, some of it hard-won through difficult talks with car makers, stands in sharp contrast to the failure of other environmental initiatives, like climate change legislation.

What success? This is only going to increase the price of food, among other things.

Why are we still basing policy on global warming when more and more evidence is being brought forward that there is no science behind it? Virtually all research in favor of AGW is flawed based on the fact that the researchers basically ignored any evidence that didn't conform to their theories. New satellite data even throws the whole green house gas issue into serious question.

And yet, "o" and his minions at the EPA keep issuing economy wrecking regulations. And no one in the press are even questioning them on it.

Any turd in a punch bowl can make this stuff up as long as it is not on his own watch:

I wonder what would happen if (say) a thousand of these big rigs were to happen to drive to Washington DC and park by the WH?

Looks like they are doing Valin's truck protest in Australia....

Queensland-based National Road Freighters Association has organised the convoy, which will roll into the national capital on August 22, and Mr Porter, who is a state delegate of the NRFA, said protestors would push to overturn the government.

“We’re trying to get the Labor Government sacked because of the carbon tax which no one wants and the handling of live exports which was none of Australia’s business,” Mr Porter said.

“It’s not specifically a trucking protest – it’s actually a coalition of all industries.

“It’s basically trying to protect our farmers and our transport industry,” he said.

Mr Porter said people from Terang, Camperdown as well as Warrnambool and Hamilton would join the Colac contingent of about five.

He said he wanted to recruit more people for the procession, which would leave Colac on August 21 stopping at Geelong, Melbourne, Albury, overnight at Coolac, before continuing to Canberra.

More than 4000 vehicles in 10 other convoys from across Australia, from as far as Port Hedland in Western Australia and Atherton in northern Queensland, will converge on Parliament House on the same day.
