Former Massachusetts Senate President William Bulger, the recipient of one of the largest pensions in state history, could see his wallet take as hard a hit as his reputation if prosecutors succeed in forcing him to foot the bill for his accused serial killer brother’s defense.

The elusive William Bulger — once the state’s most powerful lawmaker — finally came out of hiding yesterday and found himself face-to-face with his crime boss older brother, James “Whitey” Bulger, in U.S. District Court. Whitey Bulger’s court-appointed attorney said the South Boston mob kingpin, who reportedly had $800,000 stashed in his Santa Monica, Calif., hideout, was broke and needed taxpayer dollars to fund his defense.

Whitey, you want public to pay? Fuhgeddaboutit!

Hey Whitey, I’m not paying for your lawyer.

What’s next, Whitey? Will you be demanding that we start paying you your $120,000 annual Lottery “winnings” again?

These Bulgers are beyond cheap. They wouldn’t pay a nickel to see an earthquake. They toss around quarters like manhole covers. And now the judge asks Whitey if he can afford a lawyer.

“I could if you’d give me my money back.”

His money? His 800 large? As if he actually “earned” that money. Some gangsters are businessmen: They provide services such as running nightclubs or taking bets. The only service Whitey ever provided was “protection.” Protection from him, that is.

Heartless killer revels in limelight

It happened at the very end of Whitey Bulger’s back-to-back appearances inside the Moakley Courthouse.

The U.S. Marshals cuffed his hands behind his back and were leading the sturdy 81-year-old killer out of Courtroom 10 when he looked up and flashed a sly, haunting smile directly at his kid brother, Billy.

It was an ice-cold grin, tinged with defiance and a kind of sinister glee. It was the last glimpse Billy had of the brother whose appearance yesterday — just down the street from where he stands accused of slaughtering Brian Halloran and Michael Donahue 30 years ago — unleashed a media firestorm.

Whitey Bulger holds court in Hub

Arraignment draws crowds

By Laurel J. Sweet and Jessica Heslam

During the 16 years he was on the lam, James “Whitey” Bulger’s urban legend grew to epic proportions, but it took just 30 minutes yesterday for the South Boston mobster’s reign of terror to be summed up in court.

“Not surprisingly, we are moving for detention,’’ assistant U.S. Attorney Brian T. Kelly told U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Leo T. Sorokin.

Still in the white hoodie, blue jeans and sneakers he was wearing Wednesday when he and Catherine Greig of Quincy were captured in their seaside Santa Monica, Calif., love nest, the bald and bearded Bulger entered no pleas to dozens of murder, racketeering, extortion and money-laundering indictments dur-ing his initial appearances before Sorokin, then Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler.

Life on lam took toll on Catherine Greig

By Laurel J. Sweet and Jessica Heslam

Catherine Elizabeth Greig, romanticized in mob lore as a bottle blonde so vain she’d risk her life on the lam for a manicure, made her much-anticipated entrance in Boston’s federal court yesterday a ghostly gray waif.

In a barely audible whisper from beneath a shorn shock of white hair, the 60-year-old Quincy moll of mobster James “Whitey” Bulger appeared in U.S. District Court for all of 16 minutes after federal prosecutors had waited 16 years to confront her with a 1997 indictment for harboring a federal fugitive.

Beach bum Whitey Bulger kept close eye on Catherine Greig

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — She moved about the neighborhood freely, popping into the stores and impressing neighbors and other locals as a friendly, lovely woman.

He went nowhere without her, his baseball cap or his sunglasses, and was known to tell her to stop chatting so much.

She cruised the salons, shops and grocery stores.

He spent a lot of time on the couch, watching TV.

They had no landline phone, no car, and, for the past couple of months, a sign on their apartment door: “Please do not knock at any time.”

Hub trial lawyers jockey for crack at ‘ultimate challenge’

richardWeir.gif?123=23?1=1 By Richard Weir

While the chance to defend famed reputed mobster James “Whitey” Bulger equates to a Super Bowl appearance for the Hub’s sharpest barristers, many are finding they must bow out because they have represented other characters in the tangled legal case.

“If a lawyer is looking for publicity, it’s hard to imagine a case that could provide any more than the case of U.S. v. Bulger,” said David Frank, managing editor of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly. “It’s O.J. Simpson times two.”

If you watch the video and see Billy Bulger testify, Howie Carr is behind him. If I remember correctly, Howie's reactions during the testimony were telling, but I didn't see any of that in that clip.

Agency works to fix image

FBI rebuffs conspiracy rumors

Joe Dwinell By Joe Dwinell

“Bulger discredited the bureau. It’s the single most sensitive case for people who care about the FBI’s image,” said attorney Michael Kendall, a former prosecutor now with the Hub firm of McDermott, Will & Emery.

“Most . . . who work for the FBI are fabulous. But there was a rotten group involved with Bulger,” he added.
