Obama 'Deficit Reduction' Speech More a Call to Arms

Human Events:

It wasn’t a budget, or a bill, or even an outline. Officially dubbed “The Country That We Believe In,” the President’s address at George Washington University had long been billed as his “deficit reduction” speech. He was expected to use the occasion to respond to the House Republican budget proposal offered earlier this month by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R.-Wis.) and propose his alternative agenda for dealing with a deficit estimated at $1.6 trillion.

As it turned out, Obama did respond to Ryan and his budget and did so in no uncertain terms. This was no surprise to the White House Press Corps, which had been warmed up for the address yesterday by Press Secretary Jay Carney and earlier today by a “senior administration offical” (who briefed reporters on the content of the address via conference call).

So, in a nutshell, the President praised Ryan for spelling out “worthy goals for us to achieve”—deficit reduction and dealing with the challenge of Medicare and Medicaid. And to no one’s surprise, Obama rejected Ryan’s solutions, “borrowed” from the Bowles-Simpson fiscal commission he appointed last year (and whose suggestions he has been conspicuous in not trumpeting much), and called for repeal of the tax cuts on the highest income earners (that he himself reluctantly agreed to continue on Dec. 7).

In short, there was nothing fresh or bold in Obama’s address. If there was anything dramatic, it was in the rhetoric he used to denounce the Ryan budget approach to deficit reduction and dealing with entitlements. At the very least, it was a sneak preview of the campaign rhetoric Obama is sure to evince as he seeks reelection next year. At worst, it was old-fashioned and outright class warfare.snip

Obama's budget speech shows his unyielding ideology

President Obama on Wednesday declared himself "honest about what's causing our deficit" and ready to face "tough choices." Yet he insisted on "protecting" his administration's "investments in the future."

Billed as a speech about cutting the deficit, Obama instead delivered a speech about why not to cut spending and why to preserve all of his programs. "We do not have to sacrifice the America I believe in," he said, in one of his many uses of the first-person singular.

Attempting to position himself as the grown-up in the room, Obama instead made it clear that nearly everything that he "believe in" should remain untouched. Anything else would reflect a lack of "patriotism," the president implied.

For instance, the president's definition of "tax reform" is an odd one. Usually, the term implies eliminating tax deductions and credits ("broadening the base") and lowering rates. For Obama, there are no rate cuts -- in fact, there are rate increases. But more revealing, the only "loopholes" he wants to kill are those with which he disagrees.

Obama has created dozens of tax credits and tax deductions aimed at shaping the economy in his image. Obama's supposedly "serious" talk about the deficit never proposed to eliminate his own tax credits. He also never touches other tax credits that reward the behaviors he likes, even at the expense of the economy and tax revenue -- like the ethanol-blending credit.snip

Obama Sinks to the Occasion

President Obama always lets you down. Just when you think he’s ready to deliver a lofty speech chocked with specifics on handling the spending and debt emergency, he offers up a hyper-partisan attack on the leading Republican proposal, gives practically no details of his own plan, and then sanctimoniously puts himself on the side of preserving “the American dream for future generations.”

Obama didn’t rise to the occasion. He actually sank, as he did two months ago when he released a 2012 budget that would increase spending by $40 billion and double the national debt over the next decade.

Let me list the lowlights of the president’s speech this afternoon at George Washington University:

♦ The problem is George W. Bush’s fault. This is a hardy perennial of Obama’s. “America’s finances were in great shape by the year 2000,” he said. Then spending skyrocketed due to two wars and a prescription drug program and “we didn’t pay for any of this new spending.” The fiscal problem was made worse “with trillions of dollars in unpaid for tax cuts.” He didn’t mention that discretionary spending soared on his watch by 11 percent in 2009 and 14 percent in 2010, up from 6 percent in 2008, the last Bush year. Nor did he concede that Democrats wanted a bigger, more expensive Medicare drug program.

♦ The president distorted the Republican budget for 2012 drafted by Representative Paul Ryan and approved by the House Budget Committee. Ryan’s vision “says if our roads crumble and our bridges collapse, we can’t afford to fix them…[and] says America can’t afford to keep the promise we’ve made to care for our seniors,” Obama declared. And, oh, yes, there are the kids with disabilities or autism or Down syndrome who would have to “fend for themselves” if the Ryan budget passes.

The Presidential Divider

Did someone move the 2012 election to June 1? We ask because President Obama's extraordinary response to Paul Ryan's budget yesterday—with its blistering partisanship and multiple distortions—was the kind Presidents usually outsource to some junior lieutenant. Mr. Obama's fundamentally political document would have been unusual even for a Vice President in the fervor of a campaign.

The immediate political goal was to inoculate the White House from criticism that it is not serious about the fiscal crisis, after ignoring its own deficit commission last year and tossing off a $3.73 trillion budget in February that increased spending amid a record deficit of $1.65 trillion. Mr. Obama was chased to George Washington University yesterday because Mr. Ryan and the Republicans outflanked him on fiscal discipline and are now setting the national political agenda.

Mr. Obama did not deign to propose an alternative to rival Mr. Ryan's plan, even as he categorically rejected all its reform ideas, repeatedly vilifying them as essentially un-American. "Their vision is less about reducing the deficit than it is about changing the basic social compact in America," he said, supposedly pitting "children with autism or Down's syndrome" against "every millionaire and billionaire in our society." The President was not attempting to join the debate Mr. Ryan has started, but to close it off just as it begins and banish House GOP ideas to political Siberia.

Mr. Obama then packaged his poison in the rhetoric of bipartisanship—which "starts," he said, "by being honest about what's causing our deficit." The speech he chose to deliver was dishonest even by modern political standards.

Wow, shoutGeee! What a study you posted!

I can't bring myself to watch him speak anymore.......I just end up yelling at the TV........so I wait until people break it down, pre-loading a critique with their own vitriol. It makes Obama more palatable.

In a way, it's almost like having to have an interpreter to parse what some foreigner is preaching at ya.

I guess that'll happen if you're reading Pam Geller's, "The Post American Presidency." [purchased in unblemished hardback, at Amazon.com for one cent + $3.99 shipping]

I have to comment that he's in campaign mode [a more natural state for him than governing] and has even less time than ever for thoughtful, reasoned argument that doesn't buy votes.

He reads what is put on his TOTUS by his handlers........sort of like him having bad breath from the onions that they ate.

I said it after the midterms last year, Obambi wouldn't follow the Clinton move to the center, but instead he'd go hardcore left. Guess what?

After yesterday, I think even Newt could blow him out of the water in Novemeber, 2012.

20th-century American social critic and humorist H. L. Mencken, defined a demagogue as "one who will preach doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."

Famous historical demagogues

Alcibiades: Convinced the people of Athens to attempt to conquer Sicily during the Peloponnesian War, with disastrous results. He led the Athenian assembly to support making him commander by claiming victory would come easily, appealing to Athenian vanity, and appealing to action and courage over deliberation.

Cleon: Another leader of Athens, criticized by Thucydides for anti-intellectualism and for such rhetorical devices as accusing his political opponents of having been bribed and appealing to savage desires such as aggression.

Charles Coughlin: This American Catholic priest was one of the first to use radio to reach a mass audience in the 1930s, and was close friends with Huey Long. While initially a vocal supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his New Deal, he later became a harsh critic of Roosevelt. Coughlin's themes eventually became increasingly antisemitic and supportive of assorted aspects of the fascist policies of leaders like Benito Mussolini.

Adolf Hitler: Led the Nazi party to power in Germany by appeals to ethnic pride and conspiracy theories that blamed Jews for the nation's economic troubles. He instituted government control over the news media, and used his charisma and great oratorical skills to lead Germany into a war aimed at expanding its territory.

Joseph McCarthy: U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957. A poor orator, [4] he rose to national prominence during the early 1950’s by accusing a number of politicians and other individuals of being either communists or communist sympathizers. He presented himself as being above reproach while anyone who questioned or disagreed with him he branded as disloyal to the U.S. government. Ultimately his inability to substantiate his claims led him to be censured by the United States Senate in 1954, and to fall from popularity.

Barack Hussein Obama: U.S. Senator from the state of Illinois who was elected President in 2008. A good orator only through the aid of a device known as a TelePrompter (see aids for the thinking and speech impaired), Obama rose to national prominence during the early 200s by silence and a prominent list of voting present as an obscure Senator. His support came from a core of Progressives, Leftists, Marxists, Communists, deluded white liberal apologists, BLT church, and a group of blacks who have not accepted the fact that slavery was ended by the Republican party (see Lincoln).

Along with help from the popular media and George Soros, Obama was the figure head of the Democratic party and led it to power in the USA by appeals to ethnic pride and conspiracy theories that blamed whites, particularly Bible clinging and gun toting whites, for the nation's economic troubles. Obama instituted government control over the news media, major industry (see GM and Chevy Cruze, Volt), see also Edsel of 2010, control of banks, and used his charisma and great reading skills to lead the USA into a war against the working middle class. This pro-Obama group in concert with the national media painted all those who disagreed with him as racists.

He appealed to vanity and action and courage over deliberation and thoughtfulness. Obama presented himself as being above reproach while anyone who questioned or disagreed with him he and the media branded as racist.

He appealed to savage desires such as aggression, which, for a while due to his very own disastrous economic policies when he engaged in divisiveness, pitting the working class against the welfare class. This constant blame deflection took a bizarre form in which during his disastrous second election campaign he blamed all his woes on evil white men and George W. Bush, charging them with killing the elderly, the young, the brown, the black, the yellow, the sick, the aspiring illegal, the illegal, and the undocumented. He engaged in short lived but disastrous foreign campaigns (See Libya and Q-Daffy), continued provoking the Middle East (see Syrian War) and did not keep a single campaign promise (see Guantánamo, see green economy, see WTF, see DHS, see bullet train, see joblessness under Obama, see failed housing program under Obama).

Ultimately, his progressive form of government failed to work. This led to tremendous economic upheaval and led him to be censured by the United States Senate in 2012, and to a fall from popularity. Criminal charges were sought by those who lost loved ones due to his unpopular health care program known as Obama Care (later scrapped by Republican controlled Congress in 2012). Hounded and vilified by primarily those who had hoped for Hope and Change, Obama is now in exile in Haiti along with Baby Doc. His former wife, Michelle, had left him in 2012 and is now married to Hugo Chavez. She still enjoys taking lavish vacations, although they are limited strictly to socialist countries. Due to her large number of belts, she has been favorably compared to Imelda Marcos ( see shoe collectors). Neither of the couple's children want anything to do with their former parents and after attending college began medicine and research in private practices.

After their respective successful ventures in private businesses, the daughters found their true calling. Malia Ann became a Catholic nun, working to save souls in the Islamic Republic of Londonstan. Natasha grew up to be a Conservative spokeswoman, married to one of Rush Limbaugh's many sons, starting her own successful radio show called, "Post-Obama America Held Hostage by Progressive Monetary Policies." (Tip of the hat to SrWoodChuck)

The single two major positive effects after Obama's administration were a return to the principles of the Constitution (see for example[ 2012 requirements for Presidential election/color]) and the formation of a large Conservative movement that united all races and classes (as opposed to the deliberate divisive tactics of the Obama administration); on the industrial side, a mammoth revival in private industry and manufacturing, see for example, firearms, and a self-reliance on energy by domestic drilling, thus decreasing oil prices for all and reducing the influence of the Middle East.
