An era of 'hard-core women'

Washington Post:

Now would be a very good time to be a cartoonist. Or perhaps not. As the late cartoonist Doug Marlette frequently lamented, "How do you cartoon a cartoon? We're living in 'Toon Town.' "

On the other hand, sometimes only a cartoon character will do. There's hardly any way to treat seriously the goings-on in Toon Town's capital, Washington, D.C.

Let's just say, Central Casting's stable is full.

If men historically have dominated the scene, women are crowding them out. And they are turning our familiar archetypes inside out.

Women's liberation worked in ways we might never have imagined. The feminist woman of the left, who burned her bra and insisted that all hear her roar, is today a taupe-ish figure who wonders where things went wrong. The daughter she begat may well be a Republican - a gun-toting, breast-feeding supermom of several who condemns government for being a "nanny" and tells men to man up.

Adding insult to injury, she's also probably considered a "hottie" by the men who stand by admiringly, watching their women show those libs a thing or two about being a "hard-core woman."

We needn't name the queen of this emerging bevy of can-dos, who wouldn't deign to call themselves feminists even though they certainly are. If "That One" achieves nothing else in her life, she has popularized a new feminine image that drives men and women mad for different reasons.

I found this article hilarious for some reason.

I'd comment more, but I need to grab the hammer, get the compressor hooked up, the chop saw set up and get back to doing baseboards in my upstairs remodel project. And yea, I breast fed both my children and built a freelance business from home when they were little...

I would like to add that I think Parker doesn't quite know what to think about this. Which makes it even funnier to me.

This strikes me as a thinly veiled tribute to Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann, and why they drive the left nuts. B)

I have a few thoughts on this post:

I am reminded of the movie, Last of the Mohicans, where the leading lady is defending early settlers of our northern frontier from her British General Father, and ex-boyfriend & British Major; who have dismissed the need for releasing the men of the frontier, [who had left their families to help "the Crown" fight the French] so that they could defend their homes.

She says something like this: "They do not live their lives by your leave & the permission of the crown....they hack it out of the wilderness with their blood, sweat & tears.....dragging their children with them as they go...."

A romantic notion of men & women that were required to be able to do anything interchangebly, or face extinction.

There is a lot of talk about returning to the basic principles of our founders, which by the way were every bit as partisan & nasty in their disagreements [i'm reading an historical narrative now-"Burr" by Gore Vidal, a great book] and we think about capable women of their day Abigail Adams, Dolley Madison, Bettsy Ross, Theodosia Burr, Clara Barton and even Sacajawea. They not only supported the men of history; they raised families on their own, fought, struggled & sacrificed; without enough appropriate notations in history.

More & more, our life has forced men & women to be more than the expected examples exulted by society. The "stay at home mom".....gone. The "women who don't work, can't lift anything heavy, are afraid of guns, can't stand blood, can't endure" stereo-types are gone......unless you have slaves or more money than necessary.

It is the evolutionary growth of womankind.....the capable woman....the can do partner.

It's only threatening to people that fear change that requires extra effort/personal sacrifice, or live their lives according to some self-limiting acceptable social theories.....all of which sound like........possibly a........Kathleen Parker.

Bravo! GREAT post SrWoodchuck.

And may I add to "the capable woman, the can do partner" The fundamentally AMERICAN woman. This country has given those of us who are proud to be women...so very much and real freedom. That is a rarity still, even in the 21st century and I LOVE that.

Thanks, shoutPollyannaish!

This may be slightly off topic:

Which is why we are all, at a crux in our lives & the history of mankind......emancipated western women are a completely necessary half, of the whole of our society. We can never be allowed them to be pushed back into the 7th century of sharia law....which is touted, coddled & advanced by liberal progressives, the ACLU, Obama, his administration & backers. It is a dangerous "flavor of the month century" [like the return of socialism] that has wrecked havoc on Sweden, Spain, England, France, the Netherlands......anywhere sharia has attempted a toe-hold.

It is precisely the 'hard-core,' can-do, freedom loving woman; that so threatens advancing Islamic sharia; and invites our destruction as an American free society[/soapbox rant]

*AHEM*

OK then. How about we just settle for repealing the Women's Right to Vote?

*RUNS AWAY*

Excuse me. I need to run get my nail gun...but I'll be right back. Hold tight there for a second.

 You know, a growing number of us are on your side, so watch it! But unlike many liberal women I know...we are not to be trifled with. That said, we are smart, funny, feminine and willing to make y'all dinner without complaining most of the time.
