The Hill:

Sen. Jon Kyl (Ariz.), the Senate's second-ranking Republican, will retire at the end of his term, according to a Republican source.

Kyl, the Senate minority whip, will announce Thursday in Arizona that he won't seek a fourth term in 2012.

The vacancy will force Republicans to defend an additional open Senate seat during a cycle in which they hoped to win control of the chamber.

Democrats are touting Kyl's retirement as a pickup opportunity for their party.

Sen. John McCain ® easily won reelection in 2010 in Arizona with 60 percent of the vote, but not without fending off a conservative primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth ®.

The open race for Kyl's seat could set off another primary where the Tea Party movement looks to make its mark. Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) would be considered an early front-runner in the primary, according to GOP sources. Another Republican thought capable of winning the nomination is former Rep. John Shadegg, who retired last year.

On the Democratic side, the Obama administration might lean on Janet Napolitano, the state's popular former Democratic governor who now serves as secretary of Homeland Security, to enter the race. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) had been talked about as a challenger to Kyl before the Tucson shooting. snip

Rheo!

Whoa! That takes me by surprise.........

I thought Big Sis would be replacing BiteMe for Obama's 2012, "Insane Spending/Feigned Ignorance" re-election campaign. She would've been the perfect 'minority' foil, to Barry's serious & experienced chief executive. She also retains the VP's 'gaffe-tastic' gene, but from a feminine[?] perspective.

After the RATS opposition to SB1070 or any attempt to enforce border control, I doubt Napolitano is as popular as the LSM would like for us to believe in Arizona.

from Chris Cillizza

Democrats' best candidate is Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano, who served as the governor of the state before accepting a job in the Obama Cabinet. Napolitano is not expected to make any statement on her interest or lack thereof today.

What a great idea!!! Napolitano steps down runs and loses. Talk about a win win situation!

Politica: Sen. Jon Kyl’s exit could spark leadership scramble

MANU RAJU

2/10/11

Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl’s decision not to seek reelection has set off an under-the-radar campaign for the Senate Republican whip job, a race in which insider politics will matter much more than the concerns of tea party activists and the desires of the Republican base.

The race could pit the mild-mannered, affable Lamar Alexander of Tennessee against John Cornyn, a Texas conservative who runs the Senate GOP campaign arm. The wild card in the race could be South Dakota’s John Thune, a rising star who might eye the upper ranks of Senate leadership as a preferred path if he forgoes a run for president in 2012.

Whomever GOP senators choose for their next No. 2 leader could have far-reaching consequences, because the winner will be heir apparent to the No. 1 slot held by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). McConnell has decided he won’t endorse a candidate and will completely stay out of the race, sources say.
