The office of Sheriff, is one that reaches back a thousand years to English common law. A County Sheriff is the only elected law enforcement official in the United States; and is empowered to protect you from abuses of even the Federal government. It is why a Federal search warrant must be executed by the Sheriff. Only a game warden has more power: a warden can arrest & detain you, fine you & confiscate your property.
