Michael Steele: 'I revived the RNC'

Politico:

Michael Steele is making his case for another term as Republican National Committee chairman by touting his role in party's success in the 2010 elections and his ability to reach out to the party's grass roots.

Many Republican insiders didn’t expect Steele to run for reelection, and the chairman has been low-key in his campaigning. But, in a Monday op-ed, Steele argues that his leadership helped push the party to big gains in November.

“I ask to be judged on the only criteria that matter in this job — fundraising, turnout and election results. Based on those metrics, the RNC has been more successful in the past two years than ever in its history,” he wrote on the Daily Caller.

A majority of the 168 voting members of the RNC appear unwilling to support Steele, POLITICO reported early Monday, but the chairman isn’t ready to give up on the race.

Though he conceded that his “tenure as chairman has been characterized by outspokenness and a willingness to engage in the political debate as a force for conservative principles,” Steele said his tactics have been key to fertilizing the party’s grass-roots movement.

“Washington often fretted, but the grass roots understood. And, on Election Day, voters insisted that their own voices be heard,” he said. “Make no mistake: 2010 was a comprehensive, bottom-up victory by a party written off one year ago as an ‘endangered species.’”

The best way to continue the momentum started in the past two years, Steele said, is by giving him another two years to lead the party.

“Moving forward will require an RNC chairman who understands the roots of that victory,” he said. “To be sure, our push towards 2012 will be met by an intense and powerful reelection bid by the president. In response, we must fight — and win — every vote at the grass roots.”

I would say that the GOP won in spite of, not because of, Mr. Steele...

I revived the RNC.

This guy is either delusional or a nincompoop charlatan at best.

FOX reported his response to what he learned from the Tea Party experience with the election results.last November.

Steele was quoted as answering, "It shows that we need to focus on including blacks and Hispanics in our big tent."

How about focusing on an agenda that benefits all Americans regardless of race and articulating that message? "Build it and they will come!"

Well... the "Great Black Hope" of the Republican Party continues to view every event from a racial perspective when no relevance does or should exist. How frappin' sad!

Delusional and disingenuous, a lethal combination.

The RNC has been practically destroyed during his tenure.

To be fair, Steele took the Chairman's position in January of 2009. The RNC and the Republican Party had already disaffected the voters by abandoning their conservative principles long before. The Dims got the White House and both houses of Congress under his predecessor, Mike Duncan.
