In an attempt to bolster support for the New START nuclear arms treaty with Russia, President Barack Obama sent letters today to Senate leaders insisting that the pact will not affect U.S. determination to press ahead with a missile defense system.

Among the major concerns of the treaty's critics is that it might hamstring the United States' ability to proceed with a system designed to protect the U.S. and its allies from a missile attack. Such a system has been a favored cause of conservatives since the Reagan era.

Among other things, detractors worry that the preamble to the U.S-Russia treaty cites an "interrelationship between strategic offensive arms and strategic defensive arms."

Defenders say that language is nothing more than a nonbinding statement of fact.

It is just a 'statement of fact', doesn't mean anything. Incredible. 'I don't care what it says, just do it.' I think this needs to be delayed until new House and new Senators in place.

There are many holes with this treaty which Republican senators should consider before voting. The Russians have been modernizing their nuclear weapons. They removing their older SS-18 missiles and replacing them with their more accurate SS-27 missiles.Every treaty we have signed with the Russians they have cheated. During the SALT I and SALT II treaty era, four new types of submarine-launched ballistic missiles, five improved versions of existing SLBMs,and four types of intercontinental ballistic missiles(the SS-17,18,19, and 25)were introduced that were in direct violation of the treaties.SALT II was one of the main reasons for Ronald Reagan's strategic armament buildup.
