CBS News:

After abandoning on Thursday night a $1.3 trillion omnibus Senate spending bill, Democratic Senate Leader Harry Reid filed cloture for the DREAM Act and a stand-alone repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" - both of which are now expected to reach the Senate for final votes as early as this weekend.

Reid, faced with receding Republican support for the spending bill (not to mention threats to read it aloud in its 1,924-page entirety), turned his attention instead to two bills that liberal Democrats hope to push through in the final days of the lame duck congressional session.

The Senate is now expected to vote on debate for both the DREAM Act and a repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" on Saturday morning, and the Washington Post reports that final votes on both bills could take place as early as Sunday or Monday.

The Saturday vote on "Don't Ask" will be Senate Democrats' third attempt this year to eliminate the policy, which prohibits openly gay men and women from serving in the military, and many believe it the best - and possibly last - chance to repeal the measure before a newly Republican-heavy Congress convenes in 2011.

"I want to thank Senator Reid for his leadership in bringing the 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell Repeal Act of 2010' to the Senate floor for a vote," said Independent Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, one of the bill's sponsors, in a recent statement. "I am confident that we have more than 60 votes to end this law that discriminates against military service members based solely on their sexual orientation. Repealing 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' will affirm the Senate's commitment to the civil rights of all Americans and also make our military even stronger."
________

Speculation is that Reid pulled his boondoggle of a bill so that this would happen. We'll see.

Youse guys are too funny.

Here are the Republican names that voted for repeal.

GOP Sens. Scott Brown (Mass.), Susan Collins (Maine), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and Olympia Snowe (Maine) were expected to vote yes. Sens. Richard Burr (N.C.), John Ensign (Nev.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and George Voinovich (Ohio) were late surprises.

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin (D) was absent.

Burr and Ensign just committed political suicide. The rest are known worthless RINOs.

And please, someone do the world a favor and get rid of Lady Gaga. The collective IQ of the world would improve.

That said...

The Democrats and a handful of traitorous Republicans have done something the Nazis, Japanese, and Communists could never do, destroy the United States military. It will not be long before our military will cease to be an effective fighting force and this nation will be vulnerable.

Of course, this is exactly what liberals want as they see the U.S. military as the greatest threat on the face of the Earth. A draft will soon be necessary as there will not be enough people who will willing serve with people who are there only to try and get in your pants. Few will want to serve with a bunch of queers who are there only to play grab ass.

And don't forget, the poster child for why DADT should remain in place is Pfc. Bradly Manning, the traitor who gave all of the documents to Wikileaks, and did so because he was protesting DADT.

It is also part of the homosexual agenda as next will come the forcing of homosexual marriage on the nation followed by the outlawing of any religion which opposes it, all in the name of "tolerance." This is tyranny of a tiny minority over the vast majority of the nation.

This is why people like Snowe, Collins, Brown, and Alaska B*tch are more dangerous than Democrats. The GOP does not need traitors like this.

Someone help me connect the dots in my head. Ha.

Ok, so DADT was enacted so when people enlisted, they couldn't be asked their orientation. Now, with it repealed, they can be asked that and possibly be refused from enlisting? Isn't that a step backward?

Don't all the military rules still hold about conduct, honor, behavior, etc?

Why in the hell was this done with a war going on and now everyone is going to have to worry about changing rules, legal repercussions, etc.

I need a nap.

Sabre86!

I would hope you are wrong about this. Yes, it is a part of the LGBT agenda; to enforce approval, over acceptance of their sexual preference. As with most of those serving, having a professional character & demeanor, precludes discrimination. There are "no atheists in foxholes" and I don't think there will be any "Gay's, Bi's or Trannies" in them either. At a point where imminent death is a consideration......my only qualification is someone be willing to pull the trigger, hit the target and remain engaged.

I feel that it's valid to deny acceptance to the military, for those having AIDS or related illnesses.

Playing "grab-ass" with a member of the same sex would still be considered sexual harassment or assault; for the same reasons that are valid for members of the opposite sex. Using your position of rank or authority, to commit either of these offenses should be judged with a higher standard of punishment; while in the military & especially while in a combat zone.

Already, gays in the military that are not aggressively gay; are serving with acceptance within the ranks. Swaggering sexuality is not accepted in any business climate, and certainly can't ever be accepted in the deadly business of war. The early Greeks encouraged & approved of homosexual behavior because they felt it strengthened the bonds between warriors. I don't think there could be any bonds closer, than being "brothers-in-arms" while in harms way.

Manning should be hung as a traitor. He doesn't deserve a firing squad.

Yup... that's true. However, that's not what would concern me.

And I would not be concerned about an "atheist" in the shower with me, but...

More silly questions from me.....oh, come on, you knew they were coming.

So, none of the current status changes until a series of events happen. So, how close are these to happening?

I am sure the Marine Corps is going to slow walk as much as possible.

I got this from a comment on NewsBusters about the liberals being whiners:

"I guess now that DADT passed, they can quit whining and flood the USMC recruiting offices come Monday! It's what you wanted, so get your butts down to the recruiter and enlist.

"You think they whine now? Wait till they find themselves at Parris Island."

Again I wonder just how many people are effected by this? In my eight years of the military, I can only remember one guy that was known to be gay and he was shipped out pretty promptly. Lesbians were rampant and no one seemed to care about them. Only heard of them being cashiered when they got caught in bed together, and that was rare-getting caught that is.

I sort of equate this with Truman integrating the military. That also caused a huge uproar. And there were problems just as there will be with this DADT. Integrated units did not fight together until the Korean war. Then came integrating the schools; again huge problems. But in both cases it came to be accepted and no one thinks much about it anymore.

Being 70 I am very much old school and wonder how DADT is going to work out. Personally, if I were gay and in the military, I think I would keep my mouth, uh, keep it to myself. I guess times will change but I am just glad I won't be around to see it.

shout Rheo, I think the 0 did it now because he needed to win on something and he knows that after January, it would have no chance of passage. It is going to be interesting to see how long it will take to implement all of the details.

I've seen the figures of 66,000 as being affected.

Ha, good point on the Newsbusters comment.

This seems to be symbolic for an O victory that will get changed or overturned before even implemented. Congress makes the rules for the military and there is no constitutional right to serve, so the next Congress can certainly change all this before it is even implemented. All for show.

Hope all is well with you Casino67!

Given the choice, I'll take killing the DREAM Act even though I think repealing DADT is a bad idea. It's just that DREAM is even worse.

I really doubt there will be an attempt to repeal. They can blame the D's if it all goes to hell and if it doesn't, they don't want to talk about it. I am with you, the DREAM has more ramifications and should die, which it has?

Amen to that!

Another silly question.

I'm reading that this will affect approx 66k people, but if it is DADT, how do they know?

Good question. Maybe the same source that claimed AIDS was rampant in the straight society,

just so they could get funding and acceptance. Or something.

The GOP killed DREAM just as dead as Dingy Harry's Porkulus Bill in the Senate before the RINO's voted with the RATS on DADT.

Regarding the DREAM act. Knew I had seen the man's name and then got my updates for legislation introduced 12/17.

Senate rejects DREAM Act, closing door on immigration reform

LULAC set up a meeting between one of those lawmakers, Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio), and a young immigrant who would be affected by the law, Bernard Pastor — who was recently jailed in Ohio after getting into a traffic accident.

Pastor, who turned 18 years old in May, came to the U.S. at the age of three was nearly deported before Thanksgiving before LULAC got involved.

LULAC’s director of civil rights in Ohio picked Pastor up at a detention facility north of Columbus and they immediately boarded a flight to Washington to press lawmakers to pass the legislation.

Pastor said he told Voinovich Saturday morning that “we can’t wait any longer.”

“I told him that I’m not a politician or a person of importance per se but if they have the power to make a

judgment, they should make a good judgment,” Pastor said, recounting his conversation with Voinovich.snip

The last incarnation of the Nightmare Act had a single line provision in it which would have allowed the President to grant amnesty to any illegal in the name of "national security" so it would have basically been blanket amnesty.
