Chickadee
TIME: Netherlands' Queen Beatrix poses for a family photo during the presentation of the country's new Cabinet in The Hague October 14, 2010. Jerry Lampen / Reuters In exchange, the incoming administration has accepted Wilders' demands for a harder line with immigrants and Muslims. The government program includes measures to ban the burqa; reject more asylum-seekers; halve immigration from non-Western countries; bar radical religious leaders entering the country; set language and citizenship classes for immigrants applying for residence permits; and fast-track expulsions of immigrants convicted of crimes. The anti-liberal shift also applies to other tenets of Dutch tolerance: the government has agreed to take a harder line toward the European Union, beef up the police, and close the famous coffee shops of Amsterdam to foreign tourists. This reflects a sharp cultural shift, according to Henk Overbeek, professor of international relations at the Free University in Amsterdam. "It signals that the Netherlands is moving away from its longtime traditions of openness," he says. "This populist, right-wing, anti-immigrant rhetoric has become increasingly widespread and it is visible across Europe. Ironically, as immigration becomes less important — in part because of tighter legislation over past 20 years — the rhetoric has become louder." Pepper
Chickadee. This is excellent news. We can only pray that it is not too late for other nations to learn or that it can even be enforced. You can certainly tell that the idiots who wrote the headline at Time Magazine The New Dutch Government: An End to Tolerance? know nothing about how far you get by being tolerant of the intolerable. See Karl Popper on Tolerance (my bold and colors) "Less well known is the paradox of tolerance: Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. — In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we can counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way as we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal." SrWoodchuck
Well said, Pepper! & Popper! When I read that Sarkozy & France were evicting Gypsies, I thought it was also, an object lesson for the Muslim immigrant community. There are areas that are not safe for any non-Muslim. Area's that Muslims purposely shut down during one of their five times to pray. They fill the streets, stopping all traffic; and castigate anyone, Muslim or not, that may have other business during that time. The bruha-ha over the latest "Big Love" Mormon plural marriage reality show, where the man is being investigated for bigamy and may be charged with illegal cohabitation under Utah law; begs the question: What about plural Muslim marriages in "Dearbornistan" and other Muslim enclaves that are being run locally by "Sharia" law, and not under state or federal constitutional law? The United Kingdom "allows" the plural marriage, with the result that their welfare state is besieged by Muslim men on "the dole" having several wives, and children from those wives, that are also "on the dole." This is a severe problem in the Scananavian countries, too. Coming to a 'theater of operations' near you?
Pepper
SrWoodChuck! Coming to a 'theater of operations' near you? I am afraid so unless we stop it in 2010 and 2012.
