East Asia Intel:

North Korea used its rare military talks with South Korea last week to warn that its frontline artillery units are "thoroughly prepared" to fire at South Korean sites where activists launch anti-Pyongyang leaflets across the border.

The fliers "are raising the ire of our military and people, and especially the artillery units along the frontline are thoroughly prepared to strike the spotted centers for scattering leaflets," the North's official Korean Central News Agency quoted chief delegate Col. Ri Son-Gwon as saying during the military talks last week.

According to Radio Free Asia, the North recently held a meeting presided by heir-apparent Kim Jong-Un to disrupt the upcoming G20 summit in Seoul.

The North "regards the G20 meeting as a plot by world financial powers to isolate North Korea internationally." RFA said. "To prevent it from happening, a concrete set of measures were discussed," it said.

North Korean defectors and South Korean activists regularly float leaflets across the heavily fortified border in a campaign to urge North Koreans to rise up against leader Kim Jong-Il. Sometimes, Japanese human rights activists join the campaign.

The leaflets carry slogans such as "Abolish gulags" and "Down with Kim Jong-Il's Dictatorship." Activists have also sent the North DVDs disclosing secrets about the private life of leader Kim Jong-Il in addition to its traditional material of leaflets.

The South's military printed hundreds of thousands of leaflets and set up loudspeakers along the border after Seoul accused Pyongyang of sinking a South Korean warship in March that killed 46 sailors. Pyongyang has threatened to shell loudspeakers installed south of the border that broadcast anti-regime messages.

During the military talks at the border village of Panmunjom — the first meeting between military officials of the sides in two years — South Korea demanded an apology from North Korea for the deadly sinking of its Cheonan warship, a claim the North denies.

The talks ended without any result as the North reiterated that it cannot accept the results of a multinational investigation in May that pinpointed the North as the attacker.

South Korea Defense Minister Kim Tae-Young told parliament that the North may launch provocative acts to disrupt a G20 summit to be held in Seoul next month.

"There is a possibility that North Korea could launch provocations to overcome internal and external difficulties in the process of (Kim Jong-Il's son) Kim Jong-Un's succession and to disrupt our G20," he said.

The North Korean artillery groups are the 620 Artillery Division and the Kangdong Artillery Corps. They are in range of Seoul. The Kangdong Artillery Corps is considered to be the key to North Korean offensive and defensive operations.

You can track artillery fire using the AN/TPQ Firefinder. The system is a long-range version of “weapon-locating radar,” designed to detect and track incoming artillery and rocket fire to determine the point of origin for counterbattery fire

Wow, this sounds like a little kid argument. My husband was based at Camp Casey in Korea below the DMZ zone. He said they were all dead if NK ever decided to invade SK. They could see the NK soldiers patrolling.

My husband was in one of the last groups ever drafted during the Viet Nam War. He was sent to Korea and has been safely home for many years.
