ErnstBlofeld
East Asia Intel.com:North Korea has beefed up its military arsenal along its border with South Korea over the past year, posing the biggest threat on Seoul and its population of 20 million, and just 50 kilometers away from the heavily fortified border, Seoul's military official saidThe communist country deployed some 200 additional units of 240mm multiple-rocket launchers along the border, the official said. A 240-millimeter launcher operated by North Korea can shoot up to 22 rounds of fire every 35 minutes and has a range of 60 kilometers, putting the South Korean capital within striking distance. The North is producing more than 20 units of 240mm multiple-rocket launchers every year, the official said. "The U.S. and South Korean intelligence authorities believe North Korea's multi-rocket launchers deployed for combat number 5,300, including 240mm, 122mm, 230mm and 140mm," he said. The official said the North has also deployed 2,100 new artillery guns and 300 tanks. The number of the North's artillery guns identified totals 10,600 while the known number of tanks is 4,200. The South's Defense Ministry said in a 2008 white paper that the North is armed with about 8,500 artillery guns and 3,900 tanks. North Korea's increased military arsenal, despite its ailing economy and acute food shortage, "proves that its intention of military threat to the South remains unchanged," the official said. South Korea's Defense Ministry said it plans to publish its Defense White Paper in early October in which it will provide figures on the North's latest military capability and Seoul's moves to counter the threats.
