The Federal Takeover of Education

American Thinker:

Federal control over education has been growing since the 1960s despite the fact that the word education does not appear in the Constitution of the United States.

Now, as the current administration pushes for national education standards, federal control over education is about to expand considerably at the expense of state and local control.

Texas Eduation Commissioner Robert Scott described the push for national education standards as "a step toward a federal takeover of the nation's public schools."

A little more than a year ago, state leaders launched the Common Core State Standards Initiative to develop a common set of K-12 standards in English and math. The standards they developed, known as the Common Core, are the first and only common education standards.

Although the Common Core standards were developed by the states and not the federal government, federal funding has been linked to their adoption.snip

This is going to be a disaster if the Feds get involved in the education system. Arnie Duncan couldn't even deal with the mess known as the failed Chicago public school system and this guy will be in charge of the school systems everywhere. They refuse to acknowledge the source of the problem- the Teachers Union.

When Duncan was in charge of the CPS, a lot of minority teachers couldn't pass the Teachers exam which was written on a 7th grade level, so his answer was to dumb it down. The kids couldn't pass the yearly exams so he dumbed them down too. The majority still couldn't pass it.

Nothing worked at all until Mayor Daley took the failing schools, kicked out the principals and teachers and started from scratch incurring the wrath of the Teachers Union.

The very last thing we need is another gigantic bureaucratic nightmare in DC that will require an 80 story brand new building filled with patronage hires to help Duncan insure another generation of illiterate children.

The Feds have been involved in the education process since 1979. That was when they declared that any school system accepting Federal funding had to follow certain rules to continue receiving those funds. As the years have passed, the rules have become more numerous and more radical. It is now more important to improve Johnnie's self esteem than it is to teach him to read and write.

The sad truth is when a lot of us Baby Boomers were in school, during a time when nobody cared about our self esteem, our test scores were higher. They have been dumbing down the SAT for years. Those were the years before politically correct textbooks when the emphasis was on reading, writing and arithmetic. They actually taught us history, geography and civics, too.
