Republican Whip/House:

In The Weekly Standard this week, Stephen F. Hayes recounts a recent interview in which President Obama is asked by an Indianan, “how raising taxes during a deep recession is going to help with the economy?”

Obama’s response was telling: “Well—First of all, he’s right. Normally you don’t raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven’t and why we’ve instead cut taxes.” Hmmmm.

The White House had planned for this summer’s economic picture to fit snugly with their “Recovery Summer” campaign, giving them sufficient cover for one of the biggest tax hikes in American history set for January 1st. But with leading economists warning of the growing possibility of a double-dip recession, the “Recovery Summer” banners will probably have to go back to the White House attic as the tax man cometh . President Obama should follow his own advice and send a clear message to American businesses and families by reversing course on the tax hikes.
