Pepper
White House. Click if you dare.:Real TitleRemarks by President Obama and President Medvedev of Russia at Joint Press Conference2:07 P.M. EDTPRESIDENT OBAMA: Good afternoon, everybody. Please be seated. Dobryy Den. After many meetings around the world, I’m delighted to welcome my friend and partner, President Medvedev, to the White House. This is also an opportunity to return the wonderful hospitality that the President, Mrs. Medvedeva, and the Russian people showed me and my family during our visit to Moscow one year ago. Michelle and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at the President’s home. Our daughters will never forget having tea in the Winter Garden of the Kremlin. And, Mr. President, I hope you’ll remember having a burger at Ray’s Hells [sic] Burger today. (Laughter.) ObamaThose were the same hopes of another generation of Americans and Russians -- the generation that stood together as allies in the Second World War —- the Great Patriotic War in which the Russian people suffered and sacrificed so much. We recently marked the 65th anniversary of our shared victory in that war, including that historic moment when American and Soviet troops came together in friendship at the Elbe River in Germany. Pepper
WIKIPEDIA on the Great Patriotic War The term Great Patriotic War (Russian: Вели́кая Оте́чественная война́, Velikaya Otechestvennaya Voyna, Ukrainian: Велика Вітчизняна війна, Velyka Vitchyznyana Viyna is used in Russia and some other states of the former Soviet Union to describe the portion of World War II from June 22, 1941, to May 9, 1945, against Nazi Germany and its allies in the Eastern Front. The term is not generally used outside the former Soviet Union (see Eastern Front). It is a patriotic and symbolic term. During this period 6.8 million Soviet soldiers were killed and 4.4 million died in captivity. The Soviet Union lost 26.6 million men and women in total. Sanguine
In a bit of synchronicity, the posting about Rita Cosby's dad, http://www.therightreasons.net/index.php?/topic/22023-secret-warrior/ included this: The richest reward in that effort is Rys’s personal account of the Warsaw Uprising in August-September 1944 when about 40,000 sparsely armed Home Army fighters tried to liberate the city by themselves. It was an astonishing display of near-suicidal courage—doomed to failure because Soviet troops refused to cross the Vistula River to help the insurgents. Stalin preferred to allow the Nazis to wipe out the Polish resisters, who were dedicated to an independent Poland that he had no intention of permitting to reappear after the war. http://www.weeklystandard.com/articles/secret-warrior?page=2 Great Patriotic War, my %$^%*/!! SrWoodchuck
Pepper! Great post! "Deep Thoughts" - by Jack'O'Handy: "Words, have meaning.....my words, mean so much more than your words......my words, are special....hear; my words." "Years from now....my words....will echo with significance....changing the perception of our world.......about the Great Patriotic War. Notice.....the two 'i's, in Patriotic....and the 'me' in meaning.....use the two 'i's, to see 'me' changing your world. Can you now see....the very words....coming out of my mouth?" "I look forward to the day.....our countries are joined in.....friendship.....and common political thought....notice two 'i's again......see this common vision....more 'i's.....more words.....my words....my special, special words." Valin
Pepper! Great post! "Deep Thoughts" - by Jack'O'Handy: "Words, have meaning.....my words, mean so much more than your words......my words, are special....hear; my words." When I use a word,' Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, `it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less.'
Valin
the Great Patriotic War in which the Russian people suffered and sacrificed so much This is just a statement of fact. Most of the major battles in Europe were fought in the eastern front. That said, is Obama really that tone deaf to call it the Great Patriotic War?
