VENICE, La., June 2 (Reuters) - The White House on Wednesday approved the construction of five sand berms that BP Plc <BP.L> <BP.N> will fund to shield the Louisiana coast from damage from a giant oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana's governor said.

"We have just received word from the White House that they are going to require BP to fund the five remaining segments," Governor Bobby Jindal said at a news conference.

The Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers have already approved construction of one dredged sand segment, and the White House action allows five others, Jindal said.

Wow, five plus one berms!

This is that great calculating thinking just like Afghanistan and troop requests.

Jindal won't get all the berms, just enough to not do the job.

But Obama will get credit for helping Jindal.

Not that BP won't do it, but how will the US "Require" it. What if they say no? Attack them? Fine them? Some how the government can sure "make" people and companies do stuff even if there is no law on the books.

Translation: the remaining 4 berms won't be built. Nice of them to OK the project AFTER the tar balls started washing ashore.
