Three U.S. Army soldiers have been killed while at least two dozen service members were injured in a drone attack on a small US outpost in Jordan near the Syrian border, marking the first time US troops have been killed by enemy fire in the Middle East since the beginning of the Gaza war

The attack was first reported by CNN, and when it occurred was unclear late-Sunday morning.

The incident at Tower 22 is a significant escalation of an already-precarious situation in the Middle East, and US officials have accused Iran-backed militants of being behind the attack.

The drone appeared to have come from Syria and bypassed air defenses, making it unclear how an unmanned aircraft slipped by undetected.

US Central Command confirmed in a statement that the drone attack was a one-way operation that “impacted at a base in northeast Jordan.”:snip:

I have a solution  The Iranian Mullahs have been a war with us for 45 years. Might be time to strike back show them 2 can play that game. And  I am talking an Unproportional Response.

U.S. Senators Push For Direct Military Response Against Iran After U.S. Soldiers Killed In Terror Attack
Daily Wire News
Jan 28, 2024

U.S. Senators pushed for direct military action against Iran on Sunday after news broke that at least three U.S. soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack carried out by an Iranian-backed terrorist group.

Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) posted on X that “Iran must be held accountable.”

“Yesterday’s deadly attack by Iran-backed militants on U.S. troops in Jordan is reprehensible – and part of a broader pattern of Tehran-enabled aggression across the region,” said Michael Bennet (D-CO). “We must work with our allies and partners to counter Iran’s malign influence.”

Sen. Martin Heinrich (D-NV) said, “Those responsible for this horrific attack must be held accountable.”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL) said that Iran was “blatantly questioning U.S. strength” and that “it must end.”

“This is what happens when an administration abandons peace through strength in favor of appeasing the largest state sponsor of terror in the world,” said Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK). “The White House must take immediate action, and in doing so, send a clear message to Iran: those who target our brave men and women in uniform will pay the ultimate price.”

US forces accidentally allowed attack drone into Jordan outpost as US drone was also landing: report

US officials have concluded so far that the return of the US drone led to confusion over whether the approaching drone was friendly or not.

The US reportedly failed to stop a drone attack on a US military outpost in Jordan over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and dozens more injured. This is because the enemy drone approached the outpost at the same time a US drone was returning to the base, meaning the enemy drone could have piggybacked the friendly one.

According to the Wall Street Journal, US officials have concluded so far that the return of the US drone led to confusion over whether the approaching drone was friendly or not.

US officials said the enemy drone was launched from Iraq by an Iran-backed militia. Tower 22, where the attack took place, sits in Jordan near the borders of Iraq and Syria.

The Germans sometimes tried this

Captured B-17s and B-24 were said used to monitor and infultrate allied bomber streams on more than one occasion....

"On a February 1945 741st BS mission against Vienna, "Before reaching the target, a 'phantom' B-24 joined our formation.…The P-51s [of the Tuskegee Airmen] came in and over the radio…the German phantom pilot said he was from the 55th Wing and got lost. But the 55th Wing wasn't flying that day and the plane had no tail markings. The fighter pilot squadron leader gave him some bursts from his guns and warned the phantom to turn back. He added, 'You will be escorted.' The German pilot replied that he could make it alone. The P-51 pilot said: 'You are going to be escorted whether you want it or not. You're going to have two men on your tail all the way back and don't try to land in Yugoslavia.'…The phantom left with his escort and we heard nothing further from the event."

"On 1 December 1943 a B-17 was sighted with the letters "D" above another identification letter "B". It also had a square marking, that of the 303rd Bomb Group. This was the identity of B-17F-111-BO 42-30604 Badger Beauty V, actually from the 350th Bomb Group of the "Bloody Century" 100 BG, which used the "square-D" tail marking in service. This machine was captured but it was never repaired or used by the Luftwaffe. When re-captured the B-17 was preserved in Boeing's museum, but is not known to still be in existence in the 21st century. On the same day, a lone B-24 joined a bomber formation from the 44th Bomb Group. It was reported to have been a machine carrying the markings of a 392nd Bomb Group aircraft. However this unit did not become operational until 9 December."

Three service members were killed and at least 34 were wounded in Jordan Sunday after being attacked by one-way attack drones, U.S. Central Command announced. The service members were part of U.S. and coalition forces deployed to Jordan, near Syria’s border, as part of the U.S.’s defeat ISIS mission. This is the first time service members have died since attacks on U.S. and coalition forces in Syria and Iraq increased following the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Southern Israel and the subsequent Israeli actions in Gaza.

The White House has said there will be a response, but what form will it take and what will it do to deter the threats against coalition forces any better than previous reactions like air strikes have?

Retired Navy Commander Bryan McGrath rejoins the channel to analyze the options as well how the U.S. military is postured for the long haul in the region.

This is Tower 22 a US military base located in the far north eastern corner of the country Jordan where In the early morning hours On January 28th 2024 an enemy drone attack killed 3 American soldiers and injured approximately 40 others. Hezbollah in Iraq carried at the strikes on behalf of Iran. Iran's proxies are known for this kind of attack. Could events escalate in the middle east now into a wider regional war?

But Why is the US military in Jordan in the first place? What went wrong that this attack was able to be pulled off? Was the US military’s retaliation effective at stopping the enemy? This episode has everything you need to know about the unfolding crisis in the middle east. The United States and Jordan actually have a pretty tight bilateral relationship for over 70 years now. Their warm and fuzzy allows for 3,000 total US troops stationed to be here. From Jordans perspective the benefit is that the U.S. has provided them with more than $20 billion in assistance Since 1951. That money has been used to fully renovate 25 hospitals and most recently 12 black hawk helicopters which are very useful in counter terror missions.

Now, If we put on our strategic thinking hat these troops are important partly because of a single base called the Al-Tanf base largely made up of 200 high speed special operators. It isn’t even located in Jordan but instead just across the fence over in Syria. Al-Tanf garrison is pretty much the only thing standing in the way of Iran having a straight shot, clear supply route to funnel weapons through Iraq through Syria and then into Hezbollah in Lebanon. It’s located right on the Baghdad-Damascus highway and according to the Brookings Institution it “denies Iran one of the three potential land-bridge routes between Iran and the Mediterranean.” And so from the perspective of Iran and its proxies they very much do not want Al-tanf base or Tower 22 standing in their way.
