We are proud to be awarded the inaugural Dao Prize for our work on the Twitter Files, along with Matt Taibbi and Michael Shellenberger.

We won a journalism prize last week, and I want to crow a bit about it. But first I want to take you a long way back. . . to 2020.

Before Elon Musk bought Twitter, America’s information network—our newspapers and social media companies—were managed and censored along pretty obvious and blunt ideological lines. The rules for acceptable conversation on tech platforms weren’t sophisticated, but they were strict.

For example, it was impossible to question where Covid might have originated. This conversation was smeared as racist in the mainstream press and was flat-out censored on social media, which blocked any talk about a lab leak as a conspiracy theory. (Now, of course, the lab leak is the leading theory.)

For a long time too, it was verboten to talk about our president’s family, specifically his son Hunter, with anyone bringing up concerns about financial improprieties immediately discredited as the lunatic fringe and—of course—ultimately censored on social media platforms like Twitter.

Twitter ended up blocking a whole news organization for reporting on Hunter Biden’s finances, the better to quiet them down. Never mind that our friends at the New York Post had gotten it right, and the leaked financial details and conversations from Hunter Biden’s laptop have proven entirely accurate, a rare window into how our president’s family benefits from his service. :snip:

The Roots of Campus Hatred

Why have noxious ideas flourished at U.S. colleges? We have some answers.

Bari Weiss and Oliver Wiseman

November 7, 2023

Where did all of this hatred come from?

We keep coming back to this question as we’ve tried to make sense of the world since October 7. We’ve asked it in relation to Hamas’s nihilistic worldview as well as in relation to the group’s apologists in the West. The answers we’ve offered so far involve ideology, geopolitics, education, technology, and much more

In many ways, the epicenter of so much of the hatred directed against Israel and Jews in the last month has been the college campus. Every day brings another example of this dispiriting trend. Today in The Free Press, two pieces untangle the roots of the alarming rise of campus antisemitism.

Campus extremists need no encouragement from outside forces. But today Bari writes about a new report by the Network Contagion Research Institute, which offers a look at the actors far outside of the university campus who have poured fuel on the ideological fire. Among the report’s shocking findings is that “at least 200 American colleges and universities illegally withheld information on approximately $13 billion in undisclosed contributions from foreign regimes, many of which are authoritarian.”

"Culturally, Politically seeing less & less room for live and let live...lose today, there another battle tomorrow. The tribes are sorting themselves out. The Tribes are not Left/Right, Rich/Poor/Republican/Democrat, Minority/Majority, Religious/Non-Religous. Not sure how to describe Our Side from Their Side, but of this I am sure there are US & THEM. I am fairly sure who is an US and who is a THEM. The way I have been looking at politics/culture may not be valid anymore, or are becoming Less Valid.

One mans thoughts, freely give and worth Almost that much."

Some skinny old  wise ass.
