Cherokee Nation Chief Testifies on Native American Representation in Congress

Chuck Hoskin Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, testified at a historic congressional hearing pushing lawmakers to seat their delegate in Congress as soon as possible. The House Rules Committee convened the hearing to examine the law and procedural steps needed to have a Cherokee Nation delegate become a member of the House of Representatives. Cherokee Nation representation is promised in the Treaty of Echota. This more than 150-year-old treaty was ratified by the Senate and signed into law by President Andrew Jackson back in 1836. There is bipartisan support in the committee to move forward with the process. :snip:
