As tensions flare between Russia and Ukraine, members of Project DYNAMO are once again planning for rescue operations of Americans after the Biden administration made it clear that the U.S. government will not be coming to help American citizens stuck in the region.

“Earlier this week we forward-deployed our leadership to Ukraine and currently have American boots on the ground in the country working together with our partners to conduct preparations for a potential evacuation,” said Bryan Stern, co-founder of Project DYNAMO from an undisclosed location in Kyiv, Ukraine. “That means unlike the situation in Afghanistan, we have the opportunity to build our human and physical infrastructure before things go sideways.”

 

Planning and coordination for a DYNAMO-led American rescue operation in Ukraine intensified after the U.S. State Department evacuated diplomatic personnel and abandoned the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv on Monday.

DYNAMO, which has already helped to rescue thousands of Americans from Afghanistan, began initial plans for operations in Ukraine in January, while continuing to conduct and plan further rescue operations in Afghanistan.

The organization is made up of volunteers, many of which are current and former members of the U.S. military, who have worked extensively as a part of and with the special operations and intelligence community.

Recently, DYNAMO made national and international headlines after physically inserting team members into Afghanistan to conduct rescue operations of Americans stuck in the Taliban-controlled country. American team members from DYNAMO entered Afghanistan and escorted American men, women, and children past Taliban checkpoints to secret safehouse locations, before helping them to board transports bound for the U.S.:snip:
