An American Satyricon

american-satyricon-victor-davis-hansonNational Review:

Sometime in the mid-first century a.d., an otherwise little known consular official, Gaius Petronius, wrote a brilliant satirical novel about the gross and pretentious new Roman-imperial elite. The Satyricon is an often-cruel parody about how the Roman agrarian republic of old had degenerated into a wealth-obsessed, empty society of wannabe new elites, flush with money, and both obsessed with and bored with sex. Most of the Satyricon is lost. But in its longest surviving chapter — “Dinner with Trimalchio” — Petronius might as well have been describing our own 21st-century nomenklatura.

For the buffoonish libertine guests of the host Trimalchio, food and sex are in such surfeit that they have to be repackaged in bizarre and repulsive ways. Think of someone like the feminist mayor of San Diego, Bob Filner, who once railed about the need to enforce sexual-harassment laws, now only to discover ever creepier ways to grope, pat, grab, squeeze, pinch, and slobber on 18 co-workers and veritable strangers, whether in their 20s or over 60. Unfortunately, the sexual luridness does not necessarily end with Filner’s resignation; one of his would-be replacements is already under attack by his opponents on allegations that as a city councilman he was caught masturbating in the city-hall restroom between public meetings.Scissors-32x32.png

Some things don't change... like corrupted human nature.

But what's different now is the pervasiveness and invasiveness of this into every home in America.

At least the Roman slave mother didn't have to worry about her kids watching the MTV awards on their SmartPhones.

My boys and I had altercations over and over about MTV over 25 years ago - and it wasn't even as bad then as today. Patrick Monaghan 'dumbing down of America' echoes in my brain so many times. Sigh.

I know some things don't change, but there was a time (and not that long ago) when people knew about shame.

Its much easier to shock than entertain.

The question is what will happen next to top this?

As bad as the act on the stage are the grinning baboons lapping it up in the audience.

MTV has gone from Music Television to Mindless To View.

It's also telling whom The Zero has chosen to embrace and fete in the White House. This and the Gangsta Rap culture now proudly wear the BHO seal of approval for all to see.

In my opinion... broadcast stunts like this do more to stir Muslim anger against the US then all the Gitmo cells and prisoners combined.

If the audiences didn't lap this trash up the entertainers (if that's what you call them) would find something else to do, they are in it for the money and shock value and to see just how far they can push things. If they were counting on me to pay for this garbage entertainment they would starve out pretty fast.

1 Well it is obvious that you are not sophisticated or culturally enlighten enough to grasp the deeper significance of this performance. You need to stop clinging to your guns and bible and free yourself to embrace a newer and more open morality, a morality that allows us to express out true selves, in an open and honest way.

(dollars to donuts I can find some "enlighten" person who said this and ment it.)

2. Could it be they are following their audience? These guys know what sells,, that is not the same as what is good.

3. Can you blame them? Part of the Salifist/Islamist criticism of the modern (western) world is its decadence....well they do have a point. I've got issues with their solution, but the criticism is valid.

The sad thing is, I wonder if they know just how cheap tawdry and...boring they are?

200 years from now they will be at best a very tiny footnote in musical history

People will probably still be listening to this.

It's much worse than that, @NCTexan. Kids are watching porn -- PORN! -- in the schoolbuses on their way to school now. Snoozen takes the 15-year old twins to and from school every day.

And on a related note

Juan Williams: Songs of the Summer of 1963 . . . and 2013

Rap songs celebrating tattooed thugs make a sad contrast with the sweet music of the March on Washington.

JUAN WILLIAMS

8/26/13

Fifty years after the March on Washington, mystical memories of that seminal moment in the civil-rights era are less likely to focus on movement politics than on the great poetry and great music.

The emotional uplift of the monumental march is a universe of time away from today's degrading rap music—filled with the n-word, bitches and "hoes"—that confuses and depresses race relations in America now.

The poetry of Aug. 28, 1963, is best on view when Martin Luther King Jr. went off his speech script and started using a musical, chanting reprise—"I have a dream." The transforming insight born of the power of the interracial gathering at that time of turmoil, combined with the power of the spoken word, created an emotional message that still grips the American mind.

(Snip)

The songs by Dylan, Cooke and Mayfield have been ranked 14th, 12th and 24th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of greatest songs of all time. All three have roots in the March on Washington.

Now, half a century after the lyrical promise of that inspiring music and poetry, there is the inescapable and heartbreaking contrast with the malignant, self-aggrandizing rap songs that define today's most popular music.

In Jay-Z's current hit, "Holy Grail," he sings about "psycho bitches" and uses the n-word seven times while bragging that he is "Living the life . . . Illest [n-word] alive." Another top rapper, Lil Wayne, released a song in the spring with an obscenity in the title, using the n-word repeatedly and depicting himself as abusing "hoes" and "bitches."

Thus it has always been with 15 year old males. The thing is as soon as puberty hits and for the next (?) 20 years your basic male is nothing more than testosterone on legs and so is often and to varying degrees...insane.

The great thing about getting older is sex becomes less important. Why there are times when I can go 30...45 minutes without thinking about sex! It's great, I am able to get more work done now. smile.png

On a related note. I read an article last year stating the "Adult Industry" is in trouble. The problem is there is so much free stuff out there on the Net, that they are having trouble selling their movies.

True . The problem today is all restraints and moral codes are gone in the mass majority of the population. If it feels good, do it. Anything and everything is "normal" and accepted.

One of the saddest aspects about this Miley business is that her dad Billy Ray Cyrus has always professed to be a Christian and has had those values as he has raised his kids. Miley has made millions and millions of dollars. Too much freedom, too much exposure, Too much of anything and eveything influences and deludes and corrupts and ultimately destroys in one way or another.

She is not even 21 yet btw.

And also btw, the kids on the schoolbus didn't start looking at porn at age 15 -- this started 2 or 3 years before that, or maybe even sooner in some places. Who knows -- certainly not I. It makes me sick to think of what they are putting into their heads at such young ages. And what is being put into their heads by others, too, come to think of it. Politically and every other kind of way.

And it's not just boys, the girls are into it, seem to be proud to be called a slut. And I remember back in my dull old time a girl would do anything to avoid being thought of as a slut or easy. And the language you hear around jr high and high school will curl your hair, might even make a sailor blush

@nickydog

I agree that there's much worse than this "MTV event" that the kids can easily see... like watching porn on the school bus.

However, most kids on the bus probably know it's wrong and not acceptable.

What's most sad to me is the "mainstreaming" of this "MTV Miley" version of porn.

How many parents of teens and pre-teens willingly let their kids watch MTV (and other variants), see bump and grind at the Super Bowl halftime, buy Lady Gaga's records and sport Miley's new fashions looks? Answering my own question.... probably most of them.

These are the same parents who would be agast at the thought of their kids playing with the cap pistols that I grew up with.... back in the stone age.

Several observations:

@Valin

The great thing about getting older is sex becomes less important. Why there are times when I can go 30...45 minutes without thinking about sex! It's great, I am able to get more work done now.

Maybe [for me] it hasn't become less important....but more in perspective. More to be enjoyed as a great human gift from our Creator, instead of an animal urge to be satisfied? If it wasn't enjoyable, we would have died out as a species....and I don't think that, that sweet enjoyment was meant to be taken away as we age.

@NCTexan

As bad as the act on the stage are the grinning baboons lapping it up in the audience.

We understand death only slightly less than we understand sex. Bound as we are, by emotion & animal urge [we have a brain that supposedly separates us from the lower animal orders, but there are many aspects to that brain-including what is sometimes called our "lizard" brain]....mysteries intrigue us. As @Valin commented....men in their prime & before, think about sex as often as every 90 seconds. Is this animal urge coming from a part of our brain that demands that we must hurry & create our progeny with as many partners as possible....and in every fashion available....so that our bit of humanity can continue to exist? Maybe.....but that is where civilization, order & religious belief change humanity into something noble & more in the image of our Creator. [iMO] And that is where I agree with @NCTexan......

In my opinion... broadcast stunts like this do more to stir Muslim anger against the US then all the Gitmo cells and prisoners combined.

....and @Valin.....

3. Can you blame them? Part of the Salifist/Islamist criticism of the modern (western) world is its decadence....well they do have a point. I've got issues with their solution, but the criticism is valid.

The Islamic dominated countries [those under strict sharia law] are peopled with humans stuck in a culturally lower developed state. I'm not trying to be elitist, but as civilization goes, they are closer to their 'lizard" brain......and pre-medieval cultures. Maybe because of their religiously mandated interbreeding. Maybe because a man not in control of his urges....has a fear of running amok & must abide by cruel dictates & crueler punishments to stay in tenuous control of himself. Enlightenment does not come from rigidly suppressing all of our actions, to forcefully sublimate self. A human that seeks enlightenment will moderate their beliefs, urges & actions, with an innate focus on improving self & the human condition....all, while keeping the their focus on our Creator & his love for us. The spirit of love for God & others.....regardless of their difference from ourselves....should be the prime directive...followed, not blindly....but naturally. We are all sinners......that need to acknowledge our sin before our God & move our feet back to the path that leads to Him.

One thing is for sure......we can't go back on the same road that brought us here....others have burned all the bridges & wiped out the tracks. We have to gather together & find our right path in the coming storm...[/rant]

Miley Cyrus' father sits on group's board that slammed MTV

Calling the message the MTV Video Music Awards (VMA) sent Sunday night “unacceptable,” the Parents Television Council issued a blistering statement calling out MTV for its content Monday.

“This much is absolutely clear: MTV marketed adults-only material to children while falsely manipulating the content rating to make parents think the content was safe for their children,” PTC director of public policy Dan Isett said in a statement.

“MTV continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate ‘twerking’ in a nude-colored bikini. How is this image of former child star Miley Cyrus appropriate for 14-year-olds?” Isett added, going on to voice outrage at Lady Gaga’s bikini, a condom commercial and R-rated movie ad during the first commercial break.Scissors-32x32.png

Let's face it folks... I been reading our comments again.

We are so Jurassic!

As RM has told me many times.... Our thinking defines us as dinosaurs today.

I guess all we can do is stand our ground and wait for that next big meteor to take us out.
