Several gold bars discovered by federal agents in Democratic New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez's residence as part of a high-profile bribery investigation can be traced to a violent robbery a decade ago.

According to a sprawling indictment unsealed by federal prosecutors in September, Menendez and his wife allegedly played a role in a years-long bribery scheme that involved the Egyptian government and local businessmen including Fred Daibes, a wealthy New Jersey real estate developer. Prosecutors revealed they retrieved multiple gold bars from Menendez's home which were allegedly used as payment in the scheme.

At least four of the gold bars discovered by investigators can be linked to Daibes, both because of their unique engraved serial numbers and thanks to court documents related to a 2013 robbery which Daibes was a victim of, an NBC New York investigation revealed Monday. In November 2013, four assailants beat and robbed Daibes at gunpoint in his Edgewater, New Jersey, apartment, stealing 22 gold bars, jewelry and cash.

"Each gold bar has its own serial number," Daibes told local investigators in a 2014 transcript obtained by NBC New York. "They’re all stamped … you’ll never see two stamped the same way.":snip:

Perfectly Legal Corruption (townhall.com)

:snip:

But the thing that sets Washington's corruption apart from what normal people would view as corrupt is, while so much of what happens with our government leaders is wildly unethical, it’s not, in fact, illegal.

Not because it shouldn’t be, it absolutely should be, but because for it to become illegal, the very people who benefit from it would have to change the law to criminalize it. That would be like asking the fox to design a literally legit security system for the hen house that could easily end up killing him. No one is going to stop their own gravy train.

Feds Have Secret Recordings of Bob Menendez in Bribery Case

Federal investigators had a confidential informant who secretly recorded Sen. Bob Menendez's conversations, according to a legal brief filed by prosecutors in the bribery case against the New Jersey Democrat.

The 196-page legal brief, filed Monday in response to the senator’s request last month that his charges be dismissed, highlighted "information from a particular confidential source," including recordings of conversations between the senator and three New Jersey businessmen with ties to Egypt, as well as "draft translations of the recordings.":snip:

Talking to some cops years ago about the Gangs here. (I paraphrase) "We know who they are, where they live. Hell we know if the fold or crumple the toilet paper."

If you are going to do Crime/be a corrupt politician just Assume hat at some point law enforcement is going to know Everything.  Look  at Vincent Gigante. As Smart as they come..died in  a federal prison. Guys like Carlo Gambino, Tommy Lucchese are the exception to the rule.

Bob Menendez Hit With Obstruction of Justice Charges in New Indictment

U.S. senator Bob Menendez and his wife were charged with obstruction of justice in a new, 18-count indictment unsealed on Tuesday, adding to corruption charges the New Jersey Democrat already faces.

Menendez has pleaded not guilty to earlier charges of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from businessmen to impede law enforcement probes they faced, and illegally acting as an agent of the Egyptian government.

In the new indictment, federal prosecutors in Manhattan said Menendez's former lawyers had told them in meetings last year that Menendez had not been aware until 2022 of mortgage or car payments that two businessmen had made for his wife, and that when he found out about the payments he thought they were loans.

"In truth and in fact, and as Menendez well knew, Menendez had learned of both the mortgage company payment and the car payments prior to 2022, and they were not loans, but bribe payments," prosecutors wrote.:snip:

Menendez won't seek reelection as a Democrat, hints at independent run

New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez on Thursday confirmed he would not seek reelection as a Democrat, but suggested he may do so on an independent ticket.

Menendez is currently facing a litany of federal charges though he denies wrongdoing. He pleaded not guilty to 12 counts earlier this month as part of superseding indictment over an alleged bribery scheme. Former Menendez associate Jose Uribe has pleaded guilty to seven charges related to the same allegations.

"I will not file for the Democratic Primary this June. I am hopeful that my exoneration will take place this summer and allow me to pursue my candidacy as an independent Democrat in the general election," he said. "This would allow me the time to not only remind New Jerseyans of how I've succeeded in being your champion, but how we will secure our financial futures, meet the challenges of raising a family, owning a home, provide for a college education, and secure a more peaceful world for all of us to live in.":snip:

‘Senator Gold Bars’ Menendez Faces Mountain Of Damning Trial Evidence

Sen. Bob Menendez is charged with more than a dozen corrupt acts that span the globe. But no detail gripped the public like the gold bars found stashed in his New Jersey home

Not only did federal investigators find 13 gold bars in the summer of 2022, but Menendez’s own curiosity about their value shows up in repeated Google searches. Three separate times, according to prosecutors, Menendez searched online for the cash value of the gold.

Those details and more are expected to emerge at the senator’s criminal trial that begins Monday.

Prosecutors allege that the senator or his wife, Nadine Menendez, took bribes to influence state and federal prosecutors to go easy on his associates, aid the government of Egypt and help seal a deal between an associate and an investment company led by a member of the Qatari royal family — even as he was one of America’s most powerful officials on international affairs, as a leader of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

To prove their case, prosecutors will need to tie those gold bars to things the senator is alleged to have done to receive them. It helps that prosecutors have years of the senator’s phone and electronic records, including Google searches.:snip:

Rob Menendez seeks to keep New Jersey House seat under shadow of father’s corruption trial

Rep. Rob Menendez (D-NJ) is hoping to hold on to his House seat in November but is facing potential liabilities from his father’s corruption trial as he seeks reelection for a second term.

Menendez’s primary was thought to be a guaranteed win eight months ago, but then the Justice Department indicted his father, Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), on charges of bribery and acting as a foreign agent. The indictment dashed cold water on the younger Menendez’s hopes for a smooth primary, allowing other Democratic candidates to pour into the race.

On June 4, Rob Menendez will face Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, the congressman’s toughest competitor who has wasted no time trying to tie him to his father’s alleged crimes. Businessman Kyle Jasey is also in the Democratic primary race.:snip:

New Jersey Democrats to take first step to ditch embattled Bob Menendez

The Democratic primary for New Jersey’s Senate race will be decided next week, where voters will nominate their candidate who will likely replace Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) in Congress.

But it won’t definitively mean Menendez, currently on trial for federal charges of public corruption, bribery, and acting as a foreign agent, will be off the general election ballot come November.

The third-term embattled senator did not file for the primary but is vowing to run for reelection as an “independent” Democrat if he’s acquitted.:snip:

Prosecutor tells New York City jury at bribery trial that Sen. Bob Menendez put power 'up for sale'

NEW YORK -- A prosecutor accused Sen. Bob Menendez in a closing argument at his bribery trial Monday of putting his power up for sale to benefit three New Jersey businessmen who bribed him with gold, cash and a luxury car.

The presentation by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Monteleoni that will continue on Tuesday prompted the Democrat to scoff as he left the courthouse, saying: “The government is intoxicated with their own rhetoric.”

Minutes earlier, Monteleoni urged the Manhattan federal court jury to follow a trail of hundreds of emails and text messages between the businessmen and Menendez and his wife to see the link between the businessmen and the bribe proceeds found in an FBI raid on the Menendez residence in June 2022.

He said they'll also be able to match fingerprint evidence linking the businessmen and Menendez to the bribes, including fingerprints on the tape that bound thousands of dollars in cash hidden in coat pockets, boots and boxes found at the Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, home owned by his wife, Nadine Menendez.

Monteleoni said the senator “put his power up for sale.”:snip:

As Schumer Calls for Him to Resign, Convicted Felon Bob Menendez Claims 'Never Violated My Public Oath'

:snip:

Menendez, however, despite facing potentially decades behind bars, was defiant when talking to reporters after the verdict came down.

The three-term Democrat ignored questions from reporters about whether he planned to resign from the Senate outside Manhattan federal court Tuesday afternoon — as he insisted “I have never violated my public oath.”

Menendez, 70, was found guilty on 18 counts for accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes in cash and gold bars, while leveraging his committee post to enrich three wealthy New Jersey businessmen and the Egyptian and Qatari governments.

He now faces decades in prison after having evaded earlier federal corruption charges in 2017, when a jury deadlocked and failed to convict him of wrongdoing for accepting private jet rides and expense-free vacations from a Palm Beach, Fla., doctor.

“I’m deeply, deeply disappointed by the jury’s decision,” Menendez said when addressing reporters outside the court after the verdict. “I have every faith that the law and the facts are not sustained with that decision, and that we will be successful upon appeal.”
