Vice President Joseph R. Biden told an audience that included several hundred black supporters Tuesday that Republican Mitt Romney’s efforts to loosen Wall Street regulations would put voters “back in chains.”

“Romney wants to, he said in the first 100 days, he’s gonna let the big banks again write their own rules, unchain Wall Street” Mr. Biden said of the presumptive GOP nominee at a campaign rally in Danville, Va. The vice president then lowered his voice and added, “They’re going to put y’all back in chains.”

Danville is roughly half black, and there were many black supporters in the audience of about 800 at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research.

The Romney campaign reacted swiftly, accusing the Obama campaign of gutter politics.

“After weeks of slanderous and baseless accusations leveled against Governor Romney, the Obama campaign has reached a new low,” said Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul in a statement. “The comments made by the vice president of the United States are not acceptable in our political discourse and demonstrate yet again that the Obama campaign will say and do anything to win this election. President Obama should tell the American people whether he agrees with Joe Biden’s comments.”

Former George W. Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer tweeted: “The press pounded [sarah] Palin when she talked about ‘blood libel’ … what will they do about Biden’s ‘chains’ remark.”

Mr. Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, opposes some of the financial reforms in the so-called Dodd-Frank legislation signed by Mr. Obama in 2010. Democrats said the law would curb risky investment practices and help to prevent another financial meltdown.

The vice president’s remarks came during a two-day campaign swing in Virginia and North Carolina, where he called Mr. Romney’s selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as his running mate a move that will help clarify the race for voters. The Obama campaign is attacking Mr. Ryan’s budget plan, as well as his blueprint for reforming Medicare.

“This is a good thing, a good thing for the country that we have this stark, stark choice,” Mr. Biden said.

Obama deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said on MSNBC that the campaign has “no problem” with Mr. Biden’s comments.

“I think he [the president] probably agrees with Joe Biden’s sentiments,” Ms. Cutter said. “He’s using a metaphor to talk about what’s going to happen.”

She said the Romney campaign was engaging in “faux outrage.”

“If you want to talk about the use of words, then take a look at Mitt Romney’s stump speech where he basically calls the president un-American,” Ms. Cutter said. “The bottom line is that we have no problem with those comments” from Mr. Biden.

What a groveling fawning small minded man.

"He's gonna put y'all back in chains."

The subtle difference is that the lawn jockeys of Biden and his wealthy neighbors are not in chains.

He also said with your help we will win North Carolina again and if we do that we win the rest of the country.... Only problem is he was in Virginia. So either he is just being Biden or he knows of a shipping program to get votes across state lines...

Plugs really stepped into it.

When the right-wing and the left-wing agree that he is a total moron and should be replaced is a fine thing -

Only one problem - Hillary is the answer.

Do you think that Hillary would take it? I mean, really she's already been vice president for eight years. ;)

Have no idea!

But recent pics of her suggest she is ready for retirement.

And that insufferable speech coming up from Billy at the convention.

Chris Matthews' Tortured Logic: Biden's 'Chains' Comment Is 'Historical,' Not Racist Like GOP

Scissors-32x32.png

Now the use of the word by Biden the other day-- and can get a little over the top in his language-- was chains. Now, obviously it was a reference to slavery, historically. But I think of all of the code they have used on the other side about food stamps and welfare and welfare queens and all. It seems to me that's a negative reference to slavery and to black folk. Whereas Biden, maybe he is trying too hard to get the support of black people, but he's not using negative slurs in doing it. He is making a historic reference. He may not have been right to do, but it certainly wasn't malignant like the other stuff we get. That's my view.

The Late Great Joe Biden

Simon de Hundehutte

The smart people all say that Jay Carney told the truth Friday: Joe Biden will the running mate for President Obama this election. I think they may be wrong.

The other night, during an interview on Fox, Sarah Palin declared what's becoming more and more obvious: Joe Biden should be replaced on the Democrat ticket with none other than Hillary Clinton.

After Biden's latest in a series of over-the-top gaffes, John McCain, Sean Hannity, the editorial pages of conservative newspapers, and others (just Google, "Biden must go"),

have made similar declarations. It's been suggested, too, that the change needs to be made in the next thirty days or so.

The official Democrat talking point is, of course, to defend Joe's crazy rants as being "taken out of context" or waving them off with the all-too-familiar, "Oh, that's just Joe" Scissors-32x32.png
