DIARY OF A MAD VOTER

The Donald Goes Full Fellini at the Venetian

BY ROGER L SIMON DECEMBER 16, 2015

"Gondola, signore. Gondola..."

The familiar basso from a thousand Italian (and American) films boomed out across the painted cloudy sky and ersatz canals at Las Vegas' Venetian Tuesday night as the faithful streamed into yet another Republican debate at the hotel's theatre that looks built for a roadshow version of La Traviata.

As we all know, the Venetian's gondolas are phonies. But what about the originals? La Serenissima may be among the most beautiful cities in the world but everything there seems to be done "for affect" as well. It's all a stage set.

As was the debate Tuesday night, because, for all the back and forth, the chills and semi-thrills, the Rubio-Cruz-Paul contretemps, the desperate pleadings of Jeb Bush, the reminder by Chris Christie of what might have been if he hadn't kowtowed to Lord Obama, Carly Fiorina telling us again that she has met Putin, Frank Luntz and all his focus groups and all the thumb-sucking wise men and women in all the ships at sea and CNBC, Scissors-32x32.png

FALSEHOODS AND FALSE ALARMS

Why does Donald Trump repeat talking points that he knows are untrue? During Tuesday night’s debate, The Donald asserted that before 9/11, terrorists put their “friends, family, girlfriends” into planes, and “they were sent back — for the most part to Saudi Arabia. They knew what was going on. They went home, and they wanted to watch their boyfriends on television.”

Trump made similar claims — but that the 9/11 terrorists sent back their wives — earlier this month. Washington Post fact-checker Glenn Kessler shredded the claim. Only two of the terrorists were married, Kessler reported, and neither wife had been in the United States. The German girlfriend of one terrorist visited America, but she flew home months before the attack, of which she was unaware.

It speaks volumes about Trump’s character (or lack thereof) that rather than drop the bogus 9/11 claim, he edits it in a way that corrects one error — from wives to girlfriends — but remains totally false and utterly scurrilous. What does he get out of saying things that are patently untrue? It makes you wonder whether his goal is to lower the bar so that the next time he belches out a whopper, his groupies will just shrug and say it’s Trump being Trump. As if that’s a good thing.Scissors-32x32.png

How to Play the Trump Card

There's a current presidential candidate who brags of destroying Republicans -- but that candidate is not Hillary Clinton.

There's a current presidential candidate who thinks the government should take private property and give it to others, because the government knows better than the owners how to make good use of it -- but that candidate is not Bernie Sanders.

There's a current Republican candidate who brags of these things, and who gave half a million dollars to the Clinton Foundation, and contributed $50,000 to Rahm Emanuel's election campaign -- but that candidate is not a RINO, or at least so many Republicans say.

This candidate, of course, is Donald Trump.
