Geee
Human Events: MINNEAPOLIS — In this space each week, we try to zero in on a single politician, lawmaker, or governing body using its power to limit individual freedom and choice in some way. But, for this week, there is no singular entity or individual to blame. Instead, we highlight one of the more disturbing trends to emerge this summer — no, not Iggy Azalea songs — the widespread practice of arresting parents, usually moms, for letting their children play outdoors unattended. How widespread? A complete survey of news stories would be too long for this space, but here’s a few prime examples. In mid-July, Deborah Harrell of South Carolina was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct after she confessed to letting her 9-year-old daughter play at a park for an hour. Valin
@Geee Question: How in the world did we ever survive childhood! In mid-July, Deborah Harrell of South Carolina was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct after she confessed to letting her 9-year-old daughter play at a park for an hour. “The little girl is fine tonight, but some say an area the mother thought was safe could have turned dangerous,” intoned Deon Guillory, the reporter for ABC-6 news who first reported the story — slathering on the fear of the unknown as only local news can. ________________________________________________________________ Yes it could been the invasion site of shape shifting alien lizards from the 6th dimension There are people out there in dire need of 1. a life 2. a clue 3. a good ass whuppin.

I have said to my siblings many times over the last few days that our mother could have been arrested many times if the same standards applied when we were growing up. We played by ourselves all over the neighborhood and she even SPANKED us
Valin
@Geee And yet somehow beyond all reasonable expectations you grew up to be a useful member of society. By the time I was 7 I had learned not to hang around mom (or any other adult)....because she would find some for you to do that was guaranteed not to be fun. Moms instructions in the morning.."Be Good...Stay Out Of Trouble, Be Back For Lunch/Dinner."

Valin
Poll: 82% think it should be illegal to let your nine-year-old play at the park unsupervisedAllahpunditAugust 19, 2014Laudable work here by Reason to collect and publish data showing how unpopular its own sympathies on this issue are. I wish more Internet pubs of every ideological stripe were as forthcoming. The most recent example of a mom being arrested for child neglect for letting her kids play alone in the park happened just last week in Florida. The kids in that case ranged in age from six to eight; mom claims she was at a food bank at the time and couldn’t get back as quickly as she’d like. Oh well. Apparently Americans, especially Republicans, want government to play nanny here: As the nation debates whether such parenting choices are acceptable or neglectful, the latest Reason-Rupe national telephone poll finds 82 percent of Americans believe the law should require children 9-years-old and younger to be supervised while playing in public parks. Just 17 percent of Americans think 9-year-olds should be able to play unsupervised at the park…Democrats and Republicans tend to agree the law should require 6-year-olds and 9-year-olds be supervised at public parks, but Republicans (73%) are 15 points more likely than Democrats (58%) to also want the law to apply to 12 year-olds as well. Strong Republicans diverge from independent-leaning Republicans on this issue. Independent-leaning Republicans are actually as likely as Democrats (4 in 10) to say 12 year olds should be allowed to play in public parks unsupervised, compared to 26 percent of strong Republicans.Americans who think government should promote traditional values are also more likely to say the law should require supervision of 12 year olds at public parks—69 to 55 percent of those who say government should not promote traditional values. mozartlover
@Geee And yet somehow beyond all reasonable expectations you grew up to be a useful member of society. By the time I was 7 I had learned not to hang around mom (or any other adult)....because she would find some for you to do that was guaranteed not to be fun. Moms instructions in the morning.."Be Good...Stay Out Of Trouble, Be Back For Lunch/Dinner." Exactly. Mom & I were just talking about this. When we were kids (in Golden Valley, a Mpls. suburb), in the summertime we would have breakfast, maybe do a couple of chores, and the rest of the day was ours. We'd run all over the neighborhood, meet up with our buddies, play games, go to the park, hang out in each other's back yards, and when your mom hollered (and everybody could recognize their own mom's voice) you'd head home for lunch. Same thing in the afternoon. Sometimes we'd walk a mile to the shopping center for candy bars or ice cream or whatever. Home for supper when mom yelled for you. Evening was more or less family time. Sure was fun.
