The already-sizeable truck convoy that is making its way across Canada stopped over in Calgary on Sunday night, and by Monday morning they were once again on their way towards the nation's capital.

Unfortunately, and it remains to be seen if this is merely a result of the sheer volume of vehicles, but some are suggesting, in unconfirmed reports, that federal direction may have come in to play with the opening of all weigh stations in order to delay the convoy’s progress.

These frequent weigh station delays meant that some folks who were in the convoy, who were meant to arrive last night were still pulling in at the scheduled departure time this morning.

As a result, the convoy did not get back on the road until about 9 a.m.; but the delays did nothing to dampen the feeling of energy and freedom in the air.

'So many angry people': Experts say online conversation around trucker convoy veering into dangerous territory

Ben Cousins CTVNews.ca Writer

Wednesday, January 26, 2022

As a growing group of truckers and supporters make their way to Ottawa in a protest against vaccine mandates, experts say the rhetoric online concerning the convoy is getting increasingly worrisome.

The group of truckers and concerned citizens began a cross-country trip to Ottawa over the weekend, in protest of vaccine mandates in the country. The groups expect to arrive in Ottawa this Saturday.

The movement has since gathered steam nationwide, as videos show highway gatherings in support of the truckers, but some experts worry the online conversation surrounding the convoy has veered into dangerous territory.

“There are people who genuinely believe that this is overreach by the federal government, but there are also a lot of other groups that are involved and individuals who are involved who have a long history of very overheated rhetoric,” Kurt Phillips, founder and former lead writer for Anti-Racist Canada, told CTVNews.ca in a recent phone interview.

‘Freedom Convoy’ expected to roll through Waterloo Region on Thursday

Kevin Nielsen

Jan. 26 2022

Those who plan on travelling on Highway 401 on Thursday morning should be prepared to add some time to their commute.

There are three convoys of trucks involved in the so-called "Freedom Convoy," with drivers travelling from the east and west coasts as well as a group departing Windsor on Thursday at 5:30 a.m.

The southern arm of the Freedom Convoy is expected to hit the Ayr area at around 10 a.m. and leave at around 11 a.m., according to organizers.

The truck drivers will pass through the area as they continue their travels onto Ottawa for this weekend’s protest.

The arrival of the convoy could also cause travel snarls on overpasses as area residents could line the bridges to show support for the cause.

Canadian 'freedom' truckers massive vaccine mandate protest convoy may smash world record

Justin Trudeau called participants of the protest a 'small fringe minority'

Emma Colton

Jan. 27 2022

Truck drivers in Canada are protesting vaccine mandates on their industry with a massive convoy that may break a world records.

*"It’s 70 km long," Benjamin Dichter, spokesman for the Freedom Convoy 2022, told the Toronto Sun. "I have seen footage from an airplane. It’s impressive."

The Freedom Convoy left from Vancouver for Ottawa on Sunday to protest the federal government’s vaccine mandates for cross-border truckers, which took effect on Jan. 15. The Canadian Trucking Alliance estimates that roughly 15% of truckers in the country are not fully vaccinated, or about 16,000 truck drivers.

Guinness World Records show that the longest convoy recorded took place in Egypt in 2020, coming in at nearly five miles long.

Truckers inspired by Canada begin 'freedom' convoys around the world

Truckers are joining in Australia and Europe.

Madeleine Hubbard

January 27, 2022

Truckers around the world are creating their own convoys to protest COVID-19 vaccine mandates after being inspired by the Canadian Freedom Convoy, which reportedly has thousands of trucks.

Freedom Convoy 2022, the group that organized the Canadian trucker protest, reported initially having 1,600 trucks. The convoy, which now has nearly 50,000 trucks, will be in Ottowa by Saturday with the goal of getting "the government of Canada to repeal its cross border Covid tracking passport / phone app and ALL Covid-19 vaccine mandates," according to a press release.

The Canadian convoy has reportedly been joined by some American truckers and in Ontario, farmers came in tractors to show support. Both the United States and Canada mandate cross-border truckers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

Americans are invited to also protest the mandate this Saturday at three border locations: Houlton, Maine; Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan; and Sweet Grass, Montana.

In Australia, the "2022 Official Convoy to Canberra" has more than 44,000 members on Facebook and more than 10,000 followers on Telegram as of Thursday. The group is planning to meet in the capital by Jan. 31 to protest vaccine mandates.

European truckers are organizing to protest vaccine mandates as well. The European Convoy Telegram channel has more than 7,300 members. Truckers are organizing across Europe, including the Netherlands, France, Hungary and more, to converge on Brussels by Feb. 7.

The truckers have received an outpouring of support from celebrities as well.
