Valin
Alpha News The letter also called on Biden to use the U.S. Postal Service "to intervene against threatening letters and cyberbullying attacks." Kendall Tietz September 30, 2021 (Daily Caller News Foundation) — A group representing school boards across the country asked President Joe Biden to enforce federal statutes that combat terrorism to address violence and threats directed toward school board members and public schools in a Wednesday letter. A letter from the National School Board Association (NSBA) asked the Biden administration to use statutes such as the Gun-Free School Zones Act and the USA PATRIOT Act to stop threats and violence directed toward school board members over actions that could be “the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes,” according to the letter. “America’s public schools and its education leaders are under an immediate threat,” the NSBA wrote in the letter. The letter asks for “federal law enforcement and other assistance to deal with the growing number of threats of violence and acts of intimidation occurring across the nation.” On top of requesting federal aid, the letter noted several other issues related to school boards, which have been battlegrounds for culture wars over mask rules, COVID-19 vaccinations, schools reopening, critical race theory (CRT) and remote learning. Holding elected officials accountable is not a hate crime. Valin
Instapundit SCHOOL BOARDS ARE GETTING OVER-THE-TOP ARROGANT: MOMS UNDER ATTACK BY VIRGINIA SCHOOL DISTRICT. The Goldwater Institute filed a motion with a Virginia judge today to defend the rights of two moms in Fairfax County, Virginia, who are under attack by their local school district for exercising their freedom of speech. It’s just the latest example of a growing trend of school districts nationwide aggressively persecuting parents who are trying to promote the best interests of their children. Fairfax County mother Debra Tisler took an interest in how her school district was spending its money, especially given that the county has been in national news about its legal troubles recently. So she filed a Freedom of Information Act request to find out how much the district was paying for its legal bills. The district turned over more than 1,000 pages of receipts from its law firm, and another Fairfax-area mother, Callie Oettinger, published some of them on her website, specialeducationaction.com, redacting and sharing select documents related to the superintendent, the school board, and investigations into Fairfax County Public Schools’ cyber hacking and its virtual learning launch debacles. That’s when trouble started. When the school district realized it had handed over potentially embarrassing material, it demanded that Callie take the material down from her website, and when she refused, district officials sued her—notwithstanding the fact that the Constitution clearly protects her right to publish the information online. Valin
Eleven state school board groups distance themselves from Garland's parent protest letter Jerry Dunleavy, Justice Department Reporter October 12, 2021 At least 11 state-level school board groups are now distancing themselves from or outright condemning a National School Boards Association letter to President Joe Biden that called upon the Justice Department to investigate allegations of threats and violence at school board meetings. Attorney General Merrick Garland’s memo earlier this month warned of a “disturbing spike in harassment, intimidation, and threats of violence” against schools and said the DOJ will "discourage these threats, identify them when they occur, and prosecute them when appropriate.” The NSBA had argued in late September that “the classification of these heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.” State-level school boards in Florida, Arkansas, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, and Tennessee have now joined Louisiana and Virginia in criticizing the NSBA’s letter and made it clear they had not been consulted before the letter was sent to Biden. The state school boards in New Hampshire, Texas, and Pennsylvania also have said the NSBA did not reach out to them about the letter beforehand. Valin
SMOKING GUN: Whistleblower documents reveal FBI using counterterrorism division to investigate parents "This disclosure provides specific evidence that federal law enforcement operationalized counterterrorism tools at the behest of a left-wing special interest group against concerned parents," Jordan wrote. Hannah Nightingale November 16, 2021 In a letter addressed to US Attorney General Merrick Garland on Tuesday, Rep. Jim Jordan wrote that a whistleblower has revealed that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is using its Counterterrorism Division to investigate parents. "Last month, during your testimony before the Judiciary Committee, you testified that the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were not using federal counterterrorism tools to target concerned parents at local school board meetings," Jordan's letter began. "We are now in receipt of a protected disclosure from a Department whistleblower showing that the FBI's Counterterrorism Division is compiling and categorizing threat assessments related to parents, including a document directing FBI personnel to use a specific 'threat tag' to track potential investigations," the letter continues, calling into question the "accuracy and completeness of your sworn testimony." Valin
Education Secretary Miguel Cardona under fire for soliciting parents-as-terrorists letter Jeremiah Poff, Education Reporter January 12, 2022 (Snip) Internal emails from the NSBA showed Secretary-Treasurer Kristi Swett saying the NSBA's September letter asking the Biden administration to investigate parents protesting at school board meetings as domestic terrorists was written at Cardona's request. The Department of Education denied the secretary solicited the letter in a Tuesday statement. The letter, which the NSBA later apologized for and retracted, was the impetus for a memo by Garland establishing a joint FBI-Justice Department task force to investigate threats against school board members. NSBA WROTE PARENTS-AS-TERRORISTS LETTER AT BEHEST OF EDUCATION SECRETARY MIGUEL CARDONA, EMAILS SHOW “I think that anyone involved in this needs to resign,” Prior said. “Clearly they won’t. No one in the Biden administration from Afghanistan to this has been held accountable, so it’s really going to be up to a likely Republican House and likely Republican Senate in 2023 to launch full-scale investigations into what happened here.” (Snip)
Valin
Minnesota leaves school boards group that compared parents to terrorists On Oct. 4, Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a memorandum that called on the FBI to "use its authority" against parents. Kendall Tietz January 13, 2022 (Daily Caller News Foundation) — The Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) terminated its membership with the National School Boards Association on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the organization. Minnesota is the latest state to leave the National School Boards Association (NSBA) following backlash for a Sept. 29 letter that asked the Biden administration to use statutes such as the USA PATRIOT Act to stop alleged threats and violence directed toward school board members, actions that could be “the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes,” according to the now-deleted letter that the organization has since apologized for. On Oct. 4, Attorney General Merrick Garland issued a memorandum that called on the FBI to “use its authority” against parents who threaten or use violence against public school officials. “The MSBA Board of Directors acted last week to terminate our membership with NSBA,” a Jan. 4 letter from Executive Director Kirk Schneidawind addressed to state school board chairs and superintendents said. “Prior to the letter to the Biden administration, we had ongoing concerns regarding the value of membership with the NSBA.” (Snip)
