Just the News

Are you vaccinated against COVID-19? The answer to that question may determine how the American legal system treats you, whether an inmate, party or even lawyer

From custody fights and bail conditions to courthouse access and grooming privileges, vaccination status is playing an outsized role in courts and jails nationwide.

An Illinois judge provoked outrage a month ago by revoking a divorced mother's visitation rights to her 11-year-old son after Rebecca Firlit told him she couldn't get vaccinated because of adverse reactions.

Cook County Judge James Shapiro admitted he has ordered some parents and children in his court to get vaccinated, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. One parent recorded Shapiro asking him and others for their status during virtual hearings on the same day, and shared the video online after learning the judge had revoked visitation for Firlit.

The judge overturned that order a few days ago, after the Sun-Times asked about the video. Firlit's attorney told Fox 32 he credited the reversal to national outrage and the Illinois divorce bar.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff ordered COVID vaccination as a bail condition last month for Elouisa Pimental, a Spanish-speaking immigrant accused of distributing fentanyl. His authority to do so under the Bail Reform Act is "obvious," the judge said, no different than ordering home confinement for an accused drug dealer.:snip:

CDC Releases the Death Rate of Children Hospitalized for COVID-19

:snip:

Median length of stay ranged from 2 to 3 days during the entire period. The percentage of hospitalizations resulting in an ICU admission ranged from 10% to 25% during August 2020–June 2021; percentages were 20% and 18% in July and August 2021, respectively.

As for the incidence of ventilators being needed, that “ranged from 0% to 3% and was highest in October 2020.”

Over the last two months, of 63 Americans 17 and younger admitted to an ICU, the age composition was as follows:

0–4 years = 17 (27%)

5–11 years = 17 (27%)

12–17 years = 29 (46%)

And what’s been the mortality rate for children who were hospitalized?

Over the yearlong span, there were a total of eight “COVID-19-related” deaths in studied hospitals among minors.

That constitutes a 0.4% death rate among those admitted.

Of course, this isn’t the first time the CDC’s reported high COVID survivability for those under 18.

In mid-December, survival rate was indicated thusly:

0-19 years: 99.99997%:snip:

Too lazy to work, too callous to care: COVID’s lesson on teachers unions

On the topic of teachers unions, COVID-19 has been a real education.

In good times, teachers unions will go to the mat to defend a corpse in the classroom if that’s what it takes to prevent an unfit teacher from being fired. And in bad times, they will go to the mat to avoid having to show up for work.

Take it from Cecily Myart-Cruz, the head of United Teachers Los Angeles. She fought tooth and nail to make sure teachers in the L.A. Unified School District, while receiving full pay, stayed out of the classroom for three full academic semesters, leaving 600,000 students without any serious educational opportunity. Not only that, but at her insistence, L.A. teachers only had to teach virtual half-days, facilitating no more than four hours of Zoom learning per day — again, with full pay.

So that’s the first thing about unions — they like not working.:snip:
