Swipe This! Why hasn’t my boyfriend made a Black Lives Matter post?

July 6, 2020

“Swipe This!” is an advice column about how to navigate human relationships and connections in an age when we depend so heavily on technology. Have a question? Email [email protected]

What is your opinion of the importance of a main post on Instagram during this revolution?

I have told my boyfriend twice that it makes me uncomfortable that he hasn’t yet made a permanent post on his Instagram about Black Lives Matter on Instagram. Both times he got very upset. He said I was putting so much importance on it and that it minimized his other efforts like protesting. We’ve gone to several protests together, and I agree that protesting is important. But why hasn’t he done this one simple thing to show the people who follow him that he’s an ally?

I told him I think it’s his white fragility that’s keeping him from posting (we’re both white). He says he’s posting every day to his stories and reading and learning and protesting almost every day. He told me he’s having difficult conversations with his family. He also said he realizes that he haws white fragility, but he doesn’t like me “guilt-tripping” him.

But isn’t the point of this movement to hold each other accountable? If he saw me not being actively anti-racist, I would certainly want him to call me out. I want him to call his friends out. I’ve checked their pages, and so many of them aren’t posting.

This is the first time my boyfriend and I have had a major conflict around something political. We share beliefs and values. Even though we were raised in conservative, small towns, we’re both very liberal. He’s anti-Trump, and he is usually open to conversations about feminism and what women have been through. I’m just angry that he doesn’t see how important it is to speak out right now. I think silence is really dangerous, and it scares me that he doesn’t want to be more vocal on his main page where lots of people can see his beliefs. He is a white male living in an extremely racist country—and I think it’s time for him to speak up!

I feel sorry for the Babylon Bee. You can't make this stuff up fast enough.

According to my source, during the meetings, King County legal staff repeatedly called the county court system a "white supremacist organization" and even declared that light-skinned emojis in emails are racist symbols of "white approval."

Portland drive-in fest pulls Kindergarten Cop screening after criticism it "romanticizes over-policing in the US

Randell Colburn

Aug 5 2020

Kindergarten Cop is a movie about a kindergarten teacher played by Arnold Schwarzenegger who’s also a cop, you idiot. It’s also the latest piece of cop-centric entertainment to be reexamined following the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, which has since prompted worldwide protests and calls to defund the police. Cops and Live P.D. were canceled amidst the protests, while the team behind Brooklyn Nine-Nine is currently rethinking its next season. (Paw Patrol, however, is safe, despite what you may have heard from the White House.)

Portland’s Northwest Film Center was slated to screen the rowdy 1990 comedy on Thursday evening at its summer drive-in series, citing its “importance in Oregon filmmaking history” (it was set and shot in and around Astoria). A Portland author, Lois Leveen, took issue with that choice, calling it “a weird time to revive Kindergarten Cop” in a tweet addressed to the organization. “There’s nothing entertaining about the presence of police in schools,” her tweet continued, “which feeds the ‘school-to-prison’ pipeline in which African American, Latinx and other kids of color are criminalized rather than educated.”

“Yes, Kindergarten Cop is only a movie,” she went on to say. “So are Birth Of A Nation and Gone With The Wind, but we recognize films like those are not ‘good family fun.’ They are relics of how pop culture feeds racist assumptions. Kindergarten Cop romanticizes over-policing in the U.S.”

Bethel Launches the George Floyd Scholarship

Open to incoming African American and Black students in all of Bethel’s schools, the scholarship was established to invest in the future of diverse leaders.

August 03, 2020

Bethel University established the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship in June 2020, shortly after the tragic death of George Floyd—a Black Minneapolis resident—at the hands of a white police officer.

Available to incoming students of African American or Black heritage in the College of Arts & Sciences, College of Adult & Professional Studies, Bethel Seminary, and Graduate School, the endowed scholarship is meant to support the education of the next generation of leaders.

“At Bethel, we are committed to creating a more equitable, just, and hopeful future for diverse young people,” says Jim Bender, chief advancement officer. “We invite you to join us as we invest in student leaders who will go on to accomplish incredible things.”

President Ross Allen, who attended Floyd’s memorial service at North Central University, says the scholarship is just one of many intentional steps Bethel will take to address injustice both internally and in the wider community.

Transgender man files pregnancy discrimination suit against Amazon

Shaun Simmons claims he was harassed and denied a promotion with the online giant after telling his boss he was pregnant.

Dan Avery

Oct. 6 2020

A transgender man in New Jersey is suing Amazon, claiming he was harassed and denied a promotion with the online giant after telling his boss he was pregnant.

Shaun Simmons claims he told supervisor Mike Menno about his pregnancy in June 2019. Menno then told another supervisor, Tyler Houpt, and word spread through the Princeton fulfillment center, according to a federal lawsuit, which was filed Monday.

Simmons said he was soon harassed by other employees at the warehouse, including in the men’s bathroom, where one worker asked, “Aren’t you pregnant?”

Menno and Houpt also allegedly began criticizing Simmons’ work performance in an attempt to get him demoted.

After Simmons complained to human resources, he was placed on paid leave, according to the suit.

Jessica Yaniv files human rights complaint against beauty pageant for not letting her compete

Roberto Wakerell-Cruz

October 26, 2020

Canada Galaxy Pageants, a women's-only beauty pageant based out of Toronto, Ontario, is facing human rights complaints from self-proclaimed lesbian warrior princess and tech blogger Jessica Yaniv, after not being accepted as a contestant in the pageant's "28 Years and Older" division.

Yaniv, who is transgender with male genitals, was initially accepted into the contest, having not mentioned that she was transgender with male genitals on her application. This would go against the pageant's policy, who only allow biological females, or those who had "fully transitioned" and no longer had male genitals to compete in the pageant. This policy was noted in all paperwork and on the website.
