Valin
Knowville News Sentinel: GEORGE KORDA 8/1/16 The truth, as it’s said, hurts, which is why the truth is frequently not invited to participate in political speeches. It’s inconvenient, truth. On that score, where America’s financial situation is concerned, take Donald Trump’s and Hillary Clinton’s nomination acceptance speeches. Please. Trump and Clinton spent a combined 132 minutes talking about all the important and wonderful things each plans to do if elected President of the United States. Trump is going to rebuild the military and cut taxes. Clinton promised a Christmas list of goodies from “free” college to an undescribed in the speech – yet obviously expensive – “investment,” in her first 100 days, – and make someone else pay. Where’s the money coming from? Trump didn’t say other than there’ll be so much prosperity America will be rich again. For Clinton, she’ll “follow the money” to Wall Street, corporations, and the super-rich. Or, as the late Democratic Sen. Russell Long said, “Don’t tax you, don’t tax me, tax that fellow behind the tree.” (Snip) Not to be gloomy, but here are relevant figures. Unfortunately, they’re gloomy: * The U.S. is nearing $20 trillion in national debt, nearly double what it was 10 years ago. * American taxpayers are shelling out more than $400 billion annually in interest alone; the government isn’t paying a cent on the principal. * Deficits are more than a half-trillion dollars a year, and according to the Congressional Budget Office will increase in the coming years on the built-in growth of entitlement programs.
