DEVELOPING: A large truck drove into a crowd of people who had gathered for a Bastille Day fireworks show Thursday in the southern French city of Nice, killing at least 60 people and injuring 100 more in a terror attack, officials said.

The city's prefect of police told FranceTV Info that the death toll was only an estimation. French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the truck driver had been "neutralized" and an investigation would confirm whether he had acted alone.

A police spokeswoman, Sylvie Toffin, confirmed the incident was deliberate to the Associated Press, saying "It's an attack."

A witness, Wassim Bouhlel, told the Associated Press that he saw the truck drive into the crowd, then witnessed the driver emerge with a gun and start shooting.

"There was carnage on the road," Bouhlel said. "Bodies everywhere."

Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi asked residents to stay where they were immediately following the attack.

Robert Windrem

U.S. counter-terrorism officials tell NBC News there was a heightened state of alert and concern about an attack on Bastille Day but they were unaware of any specific warning.

NBC News has confirmed that French authorities in Turkey canceled Bastille Day events and said that the government had "information confirming the existence of a serious terrorist threat against French National Day celebrations." The French closed their embassy and consular offices in Turkey on Thursday.

In Nice, a Vibrant Celebration Gives Way to a Trail of Death
ANDREW HIGGINS
JULY 14, 2016

NICE, France — A red ambulance, its lights flashing, sped down the road and jerked to a stop. The driver jumped out, asking, “Where are the wounded?” “We only have dead here,” replied two men, trying to comfort a young man who was weeping over the body of his mother and imploring Allah to accept her into heaven.

An eerie tableau of death and dying extended along a mile-long stretch of the graceful, crescent-shaped Promenade des Anglais on Thursday night, running from Nice’s airport to the oldest part of the coastal city. One moment, there was a great street celebration for France’s Bastille Day holiday — and the next, a truck came barreling through at high speed, leaving a trail of bodies, shock and despair through a French Riviera fiesta.

Among the first people killed by the speeding truck on the sidewalk next to Lenval Beach was the middle-aged Muslim woman. Two of her sons and other family members stood, weeping or frozen in stunned silence, around her body, which was covered in a pale blue tartan blanket. Nearby there was another victim, an unidentified man sprawled on the sidewalk next to the beach beneath a bloodied sheet.

So Hillary does not think Europe was is sharing enough info with us.... Just why could that be Hillary?

Former secretary of State Hillary Clinton told Fox News on Thursday that some European countries have been reluctant to share information with the United States that could be used to fight terrorism, but that she would push for better cooperation as president.

Appearing on "The O'Reilly Factor" to discuss the apparent terror attack in Nice, France that left more than 75 people dead, Clinton said some countries are not sharing airline passenger lists. She said during her time as secretary of state she negotiated with Europeans to get more of that information shared.

"We've gotten some," she said. "But we don't yet have enough.

Nice tragedy brings back memories of attack on UNC's 'Pit'

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Julian Wooten said he experienced an uncomfortable sense of deja vu upon hearing of that a truck drove through a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France, Thursday night, killing at least 84 people and injuring hundreds more.

"When you started hearing details about the car, how it drove through crowds celebrating Bastille Day, you really think about, wow, this is something I’ve gone through, and I know what those people are feeling," Wooten said. "You put yourself back to where you were that day."

Wooten was on "The Pit," a popular gathering spot on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus, on March 3, 2006, when a Jeep Grand Cherokee barreled through the crowd there, injuring nine people.

James Moeser chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill, was criticized for refusing to call the incident an act of terrorism, especially after graduate student Mohammed Taheri-Azar told police that he drove the rented Jeep into the crowd to avenge the killings of Muslims by the U.S. across the world and wanted to create as much carnage as possible.
