Vampires, demons, and the cross: Catholicism and horror

By Steven D. Greydanus

Crux contributor October 30, 2015

“When it comes to fighting vampires and performing exorcisms, the Roman Catholic Church has the heavy artillery.”

That’s how Roger Ebert opened his review of the 1998 film, “John Carpenter’s Vampires”.

Ebert continued, “Your other religions are good for everyday theological tasks, like steering their members into heaven, but when the undead lunge up out of their graves, you want a priest on the case. As a product of Catholic schools, I take a certain pride in this pre-eminence.”

Of course, the association of Catholicism and uncanny evil cuts both ways: A priesthood that knows ancient secrets of dispatching the undead might understandably be suspected of harboring arcane secrets of conjuring them as well. Scissors-32x32.png

Luciferianism is a belief system that includes both theistic and atheistic denominations and is, therefore, heavily influenced by differing personal beliefs. Considered by many to be a religion, and by some to be a philosophy or way of life, Luciferianism as a whole has no specific dogma to which its followers adhere.

Protesters greet new Greater Church of Lucifer

By Brian Reynolds

Published 7:15 pm, Friday, October 30, 2015

The Greater Church of Lucifer in Old Town Spring opens its doors this weekend, and it has already drawn a congregation of protesters.

On Friday, crowds gathered outside the building in Houston's northern suburbs holding crosses and signs with Christian slogans. Debates quickly broke out among church attendees and protesters over whether or not animal sacrifices would occur, and whether these are actually worse than hunting.

"The pushback we're getting is from some of the more extreme religious groups," said Michael W. Ford, co-president of the church. "We have an absolute right to be here, legally.

"I always feel sorry for so-called Christians who feel so insecure in their belief that they have to come out here and waste their time when they're not going to change our mind and we're not going to change theirs."

The congregation, which follows the seven Luciferian points of power, is among the first of its kind, Ford said. Scissors-32x32.png

Where Do Good and Evil Come From?

Published on Jan 25, 2016

If there is a God, why is there so much evil? How could any God that cares about right and wrong allow so much bad to happen? And if there is no God, who then determines what is right and what is wrong? The answers to these questions, as Boston College philosopher Peter Kreeft explains, go to the heart of ethics, morality and how we know what it means to be a decent person.
