The Vortex—The Church Is the Church

By Church Militant -- Bio and Archives October 24, 2015

It may be time for a little shot of reality here. There is much talk — evidence, actually — of deceit and treachery from high ecclesiastics here in Rome as well as from other corners of the globe. Many have come here — Churchmen — with the idea of changing the Church. They speak in words of mercy and all that. But their intent is to dismantle the Church of Our Blessed Lord, His Holy Bride. They want to not just put Her in different clothing so the world will be more likely to accept Her and not be offended by Her, they actually want to swap Her for a totally different Bride.

This is what they want the world to perceive. This is the message they want playing like a steady drumbeat in the back of people’s minds. This is why the never-ending talk of new this and new that, renewal this and renewal that — new approach, new listening, new language, new methods, new ways, new everything. At least on this point, they’re being honest; they do want everything new. But their new is so radically new that nothing of the old remains. SYNOD OF BISHOPS

Bishops may be leaving an opening on a core family issue

By Nicole Winfield and Daniela Petroff

Associated Press October 24, 2015

VATICAN CITY — Catholic bishops were voting Saturday on a final document to better minister to families following a contentious, three-week summit at the Vatican that exposed deep divisions among prelates over Pope Francis’ call for a more merciful and less judgmental Church.

Conservative bishops had strongly resisted calls by more liberal bishops to offer a more welcoming approach to gays and divorced Catholics, citing Church doctrine on sexuality and marriage. But it wasn’t clear that they had mustered the votes needed to close the door entirely on the core question of whether divorced and civilly remarried Catholics can receive Communion.

Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn said Saturday the final text, while not addressing the Communion issue head on, speaks obliquely about the “discernment” necessary to help couples in irregular situations. Scissors-32x32.png

SYNOD OF BISHOPS

Bishops: Integrate remarried Catholics into Church life

By Michael J. O'Loughlin and Inés San Martín

Crux Staff October 24, 2015

ROME — Catholic bishops ended their contentious three-week summit on the family Saturday with a final report that paved the way for divorced and civilly remarried Catholics to participate more fully in Church life, without explicitly endorsing their return to Communion.

But there was no ground given on the other source of rancor among the prelates: How welcoming the Church should be to gays and lesbians, particularly on the issue of same-sex marriage.

While repeating Church teaching that everyone should be treated with dignity and respect and not face discrimination, the bishops firmly ruled out equating gay marriage — now the law of the land in several countries, including the United States — with straight unions.

Nonetheless, overall the document adopted a conciliatory tone on many issues, had elements that appealed to both conservatives and liberals, and left the door open for Pope Francis to translate the recommendations into concrete action.

Divorced and civilly remarried Catholics, the bishops wrote, should be more integrated into the life of the Church and not made to feel that they have been excommunicated — not only for their sake, but for the sake of their children.
