Geee
The Hill: Speaker John Boehner told GOP lawmakers on Friday he will resign at the end of October. The embattled Boehner (R-Ohio) said he would resign from both his speakership and his House seat, he told GOP lawmakers at a closed-door conference. "Speaker Boehner believes that the first job of any Speaker is to protect this institution and, as we saw yesterday with the Holy Father, it is the one thing that unites and inspires us all," a Boehner aide said. The aide said Boehner had only been planning to serve through the end of last year, but decided to stay on after then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) suffered a stunning primary loss. "The Speaker believes putting members through prolonged leadership turmoil would do irreparable damage to the institution," the aide said. "He is proud of what this majority has accomplished, and his Speakership, but for the good of the Republican Conference and the institution, he will resign the Speakership and his seat in Congress, effective October 30." Boehner's decision comes as Congress struggles to find a way to fund the government.
Draggingtree
Dear GOP House Members – Electing McCarthy Will Fix NothingBy: Leon H. Wolf (Diary) | September 25th, 2015 at 10:03 AM With the breaking news that Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) N/A% is resigning as Speaker and stepping down from Congress at the end of next month, the House caucus is going to have to elect a new leader soon. Reading between the tea leaves, you have to imagine thatRep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) 63% thinks he has this election in the bag. If Republicans in the House quickly line up behind McCarthy as a replacement for Boehner, it will show that they have learned nothing. It will show that they have mistakenly concluded that Boehner, personally, was just an unjust victim of Two Minutes’ Hate from the voters, because McCarthy is cut from exactly the same cloth. While he might not be as orange or cry as much, there is no chance that he would hold the line where Boehner has failed to do so. http://www.redstate.com/2015/09/25/dear-gop-house-members-electing-mccarthy-will-fix-nothing/

Valin
This was an interesting read. What John Boehner told me the night before he said he was quitting The Debrief: An occasional series offering a reporter’s insights I think a large part of Boehner's, McConnell's problem is they never talk to us. Talking to the Washington Post is all well and go, but lets get real, the base of the party goes not spend a lot of time reading the Post..or the Times. Go on Rush Limbaugh, Bill Bennett, Glenn Beck, take questions from us. Explain what is going on, why it's going on, what you want to do. The Leadership needs to take a page from the Chris Christie playbook. I know a lot of people don't like him but, he sets up a town hall in a bar, a car dealership...whatever, comes in talks for 10 minutes, then does a 1 hour Q&A with the people who show up, not the reporters, the voters. Actually talking to voters interacting with them...WOW Radical Concept!!!

Actually talking to voters interacting with them...WOW Radical Concept!!! Paul Ryan has one town hall after another when he is home and in the summer sometimes even has a bus. His opponent in his next match up has been making a big deal in the papers that he is going to show up at his town halls. Ryan has answered back that he is welcome - he answers questions of people who don't agree with him at his town halls for years.
Valin
@Geee (Evil) Rightwing Talk Radio is a version of this. Mitch McConnell calls up Rush or whoever, and says we'd like 30mins. next Tuesday...he's gonna get it. John Campbell used to come on Hugh Hewitts show once a week and talk about what was going on...Wonderful. 30 mins. a month on The Blaze..or whatever. will solve a whole lot of problems for the next Speaker.
Valin
When Boehner Invited Bibi Aaron Goldstein 9.25.15 | 2:22PM No doubt there are many conservatives rejoicing at House Speaker John Boehner’s sudden resignation which takes effect at the end of next month. It can be justifiably argued that Boehner was ineffective in shepherding a conservative legislative agenda and acting as an official opposition to the Obama Administration. His habit of tearing up at the slightest provocation didn’t help matters much. However, I strongly suspect that Boehner, who is Roman Catholic, probably made his decision to depart as he was listening to Pope Francis address Congress yesterday. It could very well be the case that he has found another calling. While there is much to criticize where it concerns Boehner’s tenure as House Speaker, I do think it took guts for him to invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak before Congress earlier this year to make his case against the Iran nuclear deal. Of course, Boehner did so without the knowledge of the Obama Administration, which did not want America to hear Netanyahu’s objections. Despite considerable pressure put on Boehner to cancel the speech, he did not budge in this matter. While critics accused Boehner of turning Israel into a partisan matter, in reality it was Democrats who did so by boycotting the speech of an ally and friend. (Could you imagine the hue and cry that would have arisen from the mainstream media had Republicans boycotted the Pope’s speech en masse on account of some of his liberal positions?) Draggingtree
Thoughts on Boehner’s resignation By: streiff (Diary) | September 26th, 2015 at 08:23 AM The upside to Speaker Boehner’s surprise resignation was that the GOP was spared a lengthy and ugly mult-stage slow-motion coup in which Boehner would have to fend off a series of challenges while some high profile legislation moved through Congress. The downside is that has left the field wide open. Let’s review the bidding and then look down the road a bit. Boehner did not endorse Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as his successor This is important as will become evident later on. If we know that McCarthy did not stomp on the incipient revolt and let Boehner be turfed out then it is a solid bet Boehner knows it. The fact that McCarthy got de minimus advance notice indicates that he has not been anointed heir (or hair, if you will) apparent. http://www.redstate.com/2015/09/26/thoughts-boehners-resignation/

Draggingtree
A House Divided BrentB67 September 27, 2015 72 COMMENTS The announcement of Speaker Boehner’s sudden retirement has mostly been met with joy, and I am not sorry to see him go. But we should temper our enthusiasm about how radical a change will come with a new speaker. The reality of the House, in my opinion, is that it is not made up of two parties. It is made up of three. Democrats: This is easy. They’re what’s left over after Nancy Pelosi’s Obamacare jihad, which cleansed the House of moderate blue-dog democrats. Their districts are so gerrymandered that there’s little threat of them losing an election, no matter how crazy they are: See Maxine Waters, et al. Republicans: Nominally the GOP, but in reality the line shifts on every vote. Their districts are not universally conservative, and they tend toward more moderate positions. To retain their seats, they don’t rock the boat. https://ricochet.com/a-house-divided/
