Pearl Harbor, 9-11, and the Vicious Evil of Conspiracy Theories

“You gotta get on the web. It’s got all the best conspiracy theories!” – A Local Radio Station’s Ad for its website.

When Malcolm X gave his impassioned speech “God’s Judgement of White America,” he got exactly the reaction he was probably looking for. He delivered his oration on 4 December 1963 and it wasn’t the speech that garnered national attention.

It was a question and answer session X held afterward that blew up and went worldwide before there was the Internet to accelerate such things. Malcolm X was asked what he thought about President Kennedy having been shot and responded that it was “chickens coming home to roost.” This ill-advised political gaffe launched 1,000 Blame America First conspiracy theories.

Patrick J. Buchanan’s alternative history of WW II is just such an example. Like me, Buchanan is no great fan of FDR. Unlike me, he also claims that FDR needlessly maneuvered the US to enter WW II which he believed we could have watched from the cheap seats. Not being one to get needlessly bunged over The Rape of Nanking or the forced servitude of Korean “Comfort Women,” Buchanan blames the US for escalating WW II in the Pacific below.
