An unidentified gunman fatally shot a reporter and videographer for a Virginia CBS affiliate in the middle of a live interview Wednesday morning, CBS News reported.

The victims have been identified as Alison Parker and Adam Ward of WDBJ-TV in Roanoke, according to the report, citing Parker’s mother. The station also later confirmed their deaths.

WDBJ general manager came on the air and said "It's my very very sad duty to report… that Alison and Adam died this morning."

Don’t Watch the Virginia Shooting Video

As I write, a good number of websites and cable news stations are featuring a video of the shooting. They should stop. The man who committed the murders — a “disgruntled employee of the station,” according to the governor’s office — evidently wanted to send a message. Unfortunately, he succeeded. He should not be helped along in his endeavor in pursuit of cheap clicks and more eyeballs. The unfortunate souls who were caught unawares could not help but watch two people die; the rest of us can.

Gunman in deadly on-air attack dies after manhunt

Aug 26, 2015 2:40 PM EDT

MONETA, Va. -- A suspect in the deadly shooting of a television reporter and cameraman during a live report Wednesday morning shot himself and later died at a Virginia hospital, authorities said.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Rick Garletts said that the suspect, identified as Vester Lee Flanagan II, 41, died at approximately 1:30 p.m. of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Earlier Wednesday, the state police said a vehicle belonging to the suspect was spotted at 11:30 a.m. on Interstate 66. Police attempted to pull the vehicle over, but it sped away, eventually running off the road and crashing.

TV news gunman Vester Lee Flanagan a ‘powder keg’ of racial discord

Vester Lee Flanagan, a former TV reporter who recorded himself fatally shooting a reporter and videographer during a live broadcast in Virginia on Wednesday morning, was disgruntled over perceived racial discrimination and purportedly said he was pushed to act out because of a mass shooting this summer that targeted black congregants at a church in Charleston, South Carolina.

Flanagan, 40, who fatally shot himself while being chased by police, had been fired by Roanoke’s WDBJ-TV a year after being hired in 2012. The station had documented a number of complaints against him, including heated confrontations with co-workers and a lack of professionalism, according to court documents obtained by The Washington Times.

At his termination meeting in February 2013, he told supervisors that “firing him would lead to negative consequences,” according to personnel files that were included as part of a lawsuit Flanagan brought against the station last year.Scissors-32x32.png

VESTER FLANAGAN WAS CHASTISED FOR WEARING OBAMA PIN ON AIR

Warped TV reporter Vester Lee Flanagan exasperated bosses with his ‘stiff and nervous’ delivery, his inability to use a teleprompter – and by wearing a President Obama badge during an election report, Daily Mail Online can reveal.

Dennison also wrote to Flanagan in November 2012 to admonish him for wearing an Obama badge while reporting on voters hitting the poll booths for the US election.

‘It has come to my attention that while standing in line on Tuesday, preparing to vote, you were wearing a President Obama sticker on your clothing.’Scissors-32x32.png
